Instead of removing trading to evolve they could make it optional. Once the Pokmon reaches a certain level it'll evolve but you can trade it to make it evolve sooner.
They could do the same for most stone evolutions too, a high level Gloom would evolve in to Vileplume at night or Belossom in the day but you could use the leaf/sun stone at any time. ... Copied to Clipboard!

There was a hack of Pokemon Platinum where the only change was fixing the trade evolutions into level evolutions or directly using the required held items on them.
It was awesome. Pokemon Conquest seemed to be a foray into this kind of thinking considering its vastly different mechanics and inability to trade.
