are role-playing it in-universe? I'm thinking along the lines of the South Park RPGs, which are the only examples I know of off the top of my head.

Obviously there may be spoilers involved here...

There's a PC game whose name I am blanking on where you are playing as people playing D&D. Like the screen shows the players at the bottom and then their heroes, the enemy above them and then the DM. It wasn't very plot heavy from what I recall though

Knights of Pen and Paper does this

(bad game though. the charm wears off quickly and then it's just very grindy)

The one I'm (slowly) working on in RPG Maker.

It was inspired by the D&D scene in Life is Strange: BtS, so it's more a VN than an actual RPG, but the idea is that you're really playing as a group of people sitting around a table, complete with all their out-of-character dialogue, but what you see on-screen is their characters in the game.

Doubt I'll ever get far with it, but it's fun to tinker with for a while.

Chroma Squad is about a group of actors creating a Power Rangers style studio and all of the missions are episodes of the show you're acting out.

Things start getting real obviously but it's a great game if you're a fan of Power Rangers. You get to create all of your characters and some loose customization on how you run your studio.

Chroma Squad is pretty great! Think it's made by the Pen and Paper people too, actually. IIRC you have to worry about ratings and stuff in addition to beating the bad guys.

I liked Pen and Paper but come to think of it I never grinded enough to finish so maybe y'all have a point >_>

Yeah I think the missions have ratings but they're typically ARPG bonus mission things like "only take so much damage" or "finish off 2 characters with team attack" kinda stuff. Maybe they'll make a sequel one of these days!

Yeah I mean, I liked Pen and Paper at first. But I'm pretty sure I filled out all the skill trees pretty quickly, and the game just kept going, and every new area/arc I'd be like "surely this is the last one" and it never was. It would've made a great 2-hour flash game.

Sorta, but not really. (If I understand the question right, I haven't played the South Park games)

You'd think it'd be the case since in-universe everyone is playing a MMORPG but the core plot drivers are generally the result of the MMORPG having an effect on the "real world" like people falling into comas after dying in-game. So in that sense, the main characters aren't really roleplaying, they're genuinely trying to investigate and solve problems, it's just it largely takes place in that MMORPG. Though not entirely, in both series of games, you can log out and check your e-mail, read/watch news clips of what's going on in the game's "real" world, etc.

Some minor party members though actually are just roleplaying because they're not in the loop about the serious stuff going down which occasionally leads to friction when they don't realize the others aren't. The major ones tend to be aware though.

Yeah I mean it just ended up that they added a subtitle that said "Inspired by Saban's Power Rangers" so it could have been worse.

This sounds interesting, thanks. Glad I checked out this topic, although all games that I wanted to mention have already been mentioned.
