So when people are out camping that need plastic utensils because there's no easy way to wash dishes when you're camping shouldn't have access to them? Who would seriously be arsed to do so either

making single-use items out of plastic is a terrible, brain-dead decision. when you make a plastic straw, that carbon is gonna be shitty ass plastic for like a thousand years

....and? In the lifespan of the planet, a thousand years is a blink of an eye. Hell, it took millions of years for dinosaurs to become fossil fuels!

Otherwise there are countless one-use items made from things that take forever to degrade and, more importantly, plastic straws are freedom. Why do you hate freedom?

Because it's such a minor petty thing to ban while they're still letting far far greater problems go completely unregulated? It's actually insulting how petty it. There's no "big straw" lobby, though, so people can freely ban them and then pat themselves on the back. Meanwhile the actual problems are going completely uncontrolled.

On one hand, yeah, straws are a tiny drop in the ocean that is the world's plastic problem, and the people that act like they're accomplishing anything meaningful by latching on to that while not doing anything else are kidding themselves. On the other hand, straws are nonetheless part of the plastic problem, and really fairly easy to stop using (for the fully-abled), so there's no reason not to get on board with the effort to cut down on their use. It's just important to also keep generating demand for other plastic reduction strategies on top of that, rather than resting on one's laurels after buying a reusable straw.
My friend said something about them blocking a system in the treatment plants, but other than that I dont think I see the issue. The places that give them out the most should be required to recycle them. At this point I usually bring my own plastic straws with me for fear of having to drink through a heinous cardboard one that also requires the cutting of trees.

Bottles have a return deposit, straws don't.. so people are more likely to return bottles and straws get tossed out. Make sense?

It isnt this bad in the US yet so wait until they find out. My worst experience was a slurpee. What in the actual fuck?

As for the deposit, bars and restaurants should be held accountable, not us.

Yeah.
Guess that depends where you live because we don't have a deposit. So I kinda forgot that was a thing. I thought that was on glass bottles for some reason. Guess you learn something new everyday!

In my area though (and most from my understanding) the return is 5 cents, regardless of size. So I have to keep the bottle around for months until I gather enough to warrant returning them so I can get like $2-3 back? Not worth it. Most times I just throw them in the recycling bin and let the pickers deal with them.

One garbage bag should be worth ten dollars. Beer cans are ten cents, pops are five, and in Alberta anything over 1L is 25 cents. Ive heard of people peeling labels in BC and returning milk cartons or jugs in AB for money.

Plastic is very much the problem

Plastic recycling is actually not so great for the environment itself and ends up creating a lot of air pollution as a side effect. What we need are more cellulose derived plastics that naturally degrade in the environment.

im not saying straws are the only plastic used or that banning plastic straws is going to magically solve the worlds problems over night but theyre completely unnecessary and are extremely wasteful. Its one very small step in the right direction.

Propylene gas, the major component of straws and all other polypropylene plastics, is a byproduct of oil refining and natural gas production and the 2nd most important raw material in petrochemical industry.

So if you truly wanted less plastic to be manufactured, you also want a huge reduction in our reliance on oil.
