hen Police Commissioner James O'Neill announced the firing of Daniel Pantaleo, the officer who fatally choked Eric Garner in Staten Island more than five years ago, the city's top cop made clear that he expected backlash. "Had I been in Officer Pantaleo's situation I may have made similar mistakes," O'Neill said on Monday. "If I was still a cop, I'd probably be mad at me."

Indeed, many cops are quite mad. The leadership of the city's three top police unions, which together represent roughly 35,000 active duty officers, seem to be treating the news as an unprecedented betrayal. Police Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch has spent recent days pushing for a work slowdown, touring through precincts to inform officers that the Patrol Guide is now meaningless and that "no one has our backs."

any rank-and-file officers also said that Pantaleo, who a department judge found guilty earlier this month of placing Garner in an illegal chokehold, had been a convenient scapegoat for police brass.

People here always say it is just a few bad cop and most of them are good. Yet look at this reaction that have when a bad cop gets slap on the hand after killing someone by using a move that the NYPD had banned for years because it was killing and hurting people. If most cops are good why are they not standing up here saying good job on letting him go. They are even talking about a worker slow down. IF that happens they needs to be fired.

If that was the only example, you might have some semblance of a point. Meanwhile, people are literally dumping buckets of water on police, and the police are so certain they'd get in trouble for responding that they just allow it to happen. And the mayor speaks in soft, uncertain terms about whether or not anybody will even face charges.

People in Philadelphia were mocking police and throwing trash at them during a stand-off with an armed felon who had already shot six officers.

The anti-police sentiment isn't confined to a single incident. It's extremely common at all levels of government and the citizenry. It wouldn't hurt to show some support here and there.

Talk about fan fiction. People get support all the got damn time. And the report of people mocking the police in Philly was overblown. The person who reported walked back her story and said oh 98% of the people were supportive of the police but there were some "just"laughing at them.

Hell look at this fucking case, the guy could not even get fired without the person doing softening the blow.

Yeah, I know. It's been on the rise ever since the media decided to shine a spotlight on the whole "hands up don't shoot" meme in Ferguson.

As a person who lives 2 miles from Ferguson, that whole situation was a disaster of media sensationalism and misinformation being used to fan the flames. At no point did Michael Brown try to surrender; the "hands up" scenario was pure fiction. But it played well, produced a good Twitter-friendly slogan, and spread like wildfire across the country.

Never mind that Mike Brown went for the officer's gun in a struggle within the car. He didn't do anything wrong; it was the evil policeman who executed him on his knees, with his hands up, in cold blood. That's the story many people still believe. That's the kind of thing that people tell their children in order to convince them to be afraid of the police--to hate the police. A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes. And that lie is still traveling, over five years later, and so we're here.

What a disingenuous crock of shit. It has far more to do with the growing ability of the average citizen to video or otherwise monitor the things that police do. Surprise surprise they are caught gunning down unarmed people, planting evidence, raping women, all things that people have claimed they were always doing but could never prove. Now in light of all the things they have been caught doing, rather than the "good cops" turning on the bad ones, they form up their blue wall and defend them.

We can add to that photoshopping mugshots of innocent people to look like the criminal, for when actually catching the bad guy just takes too much effort, and they have plenty of random black guys they can just grab off the street.
