I find that in general JRPGs suffer badly from padding, especially in the tail end of the game. A personal pet peeve of mine is the whole "final dungeon is 3x longer than every other dungeon and twice as hard for no good reason" gimmick.

I've played through the DS port of CT at least twice and thoroughly enjoyed myself both times. It's my choice version of the game. *shrug*

yeah. i never beat final fantasy 3 because of this. (not 6, the japanese 3). you had to go through a big dungeon, then fight like 5 or 6 bosses in a row with no breaks, then a final boss. lose and its back to the entrance. fuck it.

The Lost Sanctum and the lifeless retranslation bummed me out enough that I never finished the DS port, and I have no desire to resolve this. Apparently Dalton makes some ties between CT and Chrono Cross in the bonus postgame dungeon, but while I love CT and CC as their own entities, I prefer to keep them as separate as possible. Never had any interest in the monster raising either; for a game that's as short and sweet as CT, the extra padding really didn't do anything to sell the DS port.

Exactly what happened to me. Had no trouble, get all the way to the end and get absolutely wrecked by the first boss, boom entrance and I literally never picked it up again.

FF9's last dungeon has almost a dozen boss battles, but it's a breeze by that point. Older RPGs were brutal.

It was added for the DS version. It's terrible because they have you running through the same area a ton of times, back and forth, and it's practically impossible to dodge the enemies so it just takes forever to get through.

same the way disk 2 was handled was just so bad to me which is why i am hoping one day they remake the game from ground up and give us a proper game this time
i get it that at the time the game ran into budget's red but man after all that build up for it to go that route is sad and the curse even effected xenosaga as well too going from Xsaga 2 to 3 felt like i skipped a whole bunch of games

The way you get laughed out if you visit the Black Omen in 2300 AD still scares the crap out of me.

I always loved this one one line of NPC dialog.

I forget who says it (maybe Crono's mom?) but you talk to someone in a house while the Black Omen is visible, and they'll casually make small talk about it, like it's always been there but they don't know what it is. Which, as far as they're concerned, it has, and they don't. The reason it's effective is everyone else seems to ignore it.

The DS version would be definitive if it didn't have the soulless, sterilized, "accurate" translation.

Want to know what else had a lot of liberties taken with its translation? Yu Yu Hakusho. I guarantee you that if it got redubbed to be more "accurate" there wouldn't be any debate that it was 100% inferior to the original. >_>

I don't really care about the the extra stuff being subpar, because you can always just ignore it. <_<
