Forcing units out of a space also works the same way. Let's say my army is already sitting in Paris. If you approach Paris with 1 army, nothing happens. You just bounce back to where you started. But if you come with 1 and another supporting it into Paris, then my army is forced out and I have to choose a nearby empty space to retreat to. If there is no valid space to retreat to, my army is instantly disbanded (removed).

You can also order a unit to support another unit to simply hold rather than move into another space.

For example if my army is already in Paris, and I have a second army bordering it.

If you move into Paris and you also have a second army bordering it, and so you order your second army to support the move in, my army will not be forced out of Paris if I order it to hold and my other army to support that hold. Because then the battle is 2v2. You would need a 3rd army also supporting to force me out.

All the movement stuff will become intuitive pretty quickly once you start tinkering with the UI. You can submit your orders and change them as many times as you want before deadline. So if you want to check if a certain move is valid, or what would happen if you ordered your pieces in a certain way, you can have the game process the orders and see the hypothetical result before the deadline passes and moves are finalized.

well theoretically but it also has a draw mechanism. If someone proposes a draw and everyone agrees then it ends the game and everyone who hasn't been eliminated shares the draw.

Basically it will inevitably end because once it becomes apparent that someone is getting close to winning one of a few things will happen. Either the other players left alive will stop fighting each other and team up to stalemate the big guy or they will be too late getting organized to stop it. Or, they might be on time but one or two weak countries who have long since given up on winning and are only aiming to spite those who attacked them earlier will throw their dots to the big guy (which is 100% valid and a beautiful aspect of the game)

They do. Germany starts with a fleet in Kiel, an army in Berlin, and an army in Munich

The triangles are fleets. The circles are armies. The tiny circles just represent the supply centers ("dots") and those will change color to indicate which country currently controls them.

A few special spaces on the board to be aware of

Denmark counts as both a sea space and a land space. So an army can go Kiel -> Denmark -> Sweden and also, a fleet can go North Sea -> Denmark -> Baltic Sea

St. Petersburg, Spain, and Bulgaria all have two DISTINCT coasts. When you are moving a fleet into one of those spaces (doesn't affect armies), you have to specify which coast you are moving into. If you choose the wrong one, your move might be invalid and your order will fail. For example, a fleet in Gulf of Lyons cannot move to Spain north coast, because Gulf of Lyons does not touch Spain's north coast. A fleet in Mid-Atlantic Ocean can move to either coast in Spain, because that sea space borders both coasts. So always pay attention and make sure the coast you select actually borders the sea space you are coming from.

Not really a mechanical thing, but interesting to be aware of the fact that Venice and Trieste are the only two home supply centers on the board that directly border each other (Italy and Austria). So have fun with that one.

Not sure exactly what you mean, but each piece counts as 1 whether it's an army or fleet.

When you are building a new unit you can choose if you want it to be an army or a fleet (but to build a fleet it has to be in a coastal province. Not all countries have equal amounts of coastal home provinces but everyone has at least 1)

And, yeah armies can support fleets and vice versa.

The only rule about supporting is: a unit can carry out a support order for any space which it could legally move to itself on the same turn.

So fleets at sea can support armies (or fleets) that are in coastal spaces. Armies that are in landlocked spaces can support a fleet that's moving into a bordering coastal space. If an army and a fleet are both already occupying bordering coastal spaces, they can both support each other to hold with power of 2. etc.

Ah

Venice -> Trieste would only succeed if you vacated Trieste

So for example. Assume Italy orders Venice -> Trieste

-If you order Trieste to hold, then nothing happens and Venice stays in Venice (1v1)

-If you order Trieste -> Venice, then nothing happens (1v1)

-If you order Trieste -> Albania or Trieste -> Adriatic Sea, then Venice army would take Trieste - UNLESS you also ordered your army in Vienna -> Trieste. If you did that then your fleet would still move out of Trieste but there would be a 1v1 in Trieste between Venice and Vienna and both of those armies would bounce back to where they came from (so trieste would be empty but still under your control)

Just to make sure it's explicitly clear. The fleet in Trieste has exactly 4 possible options for your first move.

F Trieste - Albania
F Trieste - Adriatic Sea
F Trieste - Venice

I think he's asking if army can beat fleet or vice versa. Like could you have 2 armies take a space occupied by a fleet or 2 fleets take a space occupied by an army.

Armies and fleets are all equal and interchangeable yeah

The only distinction is which spaces they are allowed to occupy (and Trieste is coastal so both kinds of units are allowed there)

In the main interface for the game there's a "Sandboxes" tab. That's where you can make a private sandbox so that you can tinker around with moves (for any/all countries) and then have it process them to double check that the mechanics work how you think they do.

Generally, you want to look at the board and see which spaces near your supply centers are accessible by other countries, and prooooobably have chats with those countries about those spaces and see if you can work out something.

The site itself has built in means for communication (they call it "Press"). When you post you can either make it public (everyone sees) or private to a specific country (just between you and 1 player)

But of course you all can use whatever means you want to talk, doesn't have to be on the website necessarily

I just think we should have an agreed upon way of communicating for all the players. Whether it be through gamefaqs or the game site.

The only downside I see to using gamefaqs is there's a limit to how many PMs you can send to a certain user if they haven't opened them. Like 3 I think. So potentially if you're sitting down to think about the game and chat to them and they're not around you might fill it up or something.

Probably just use the game site. But again it's not like it's enforceable so I don't really see it being a big deal.

Like the vast, vast majority of communications probably shouldn't be public. So having a "game" thread doesn't make a lot of sense.

This can act as if you want to publicly ask me a question about how the game works or something and you don't mind everyone see it. But in general there's probably not a lot of upside to having negotiations in public.
