I personally always try and run protection against at least Confusion as early as possible. Most of the other ones aren't so bad depending on what game you're playing.

At least with small / mini, you could still use Magic. If you ever got turned into a frog, you couldn't do anything of note until you were cured. So, being turned into a frog is the most annoying.

Confuse has caused more game overs than every other individual status effect combined in any RPG. Especially in FF8 and FFX. Confuse was basically the only way I ever died in FFX.

Confuse can be really bad. At least with Berserk they attack the enemy. Slow and Stop suck too, but Haste usually overwrites them and is also highly desirable anyway.

Id like to give a shout-out to FF5s Old, which progressively drains your levels. Curing it just stops it: the victims level remains at the new lower level for the duration of battle(barring Chemist mixes).

Depends on the game.

poison in FF4? almost harmless? poison in FFX? dead in 4 turns?

I think Stop is the most annoying cuz its not always something that can be healed. Its basically a super slow

FF9 definitely has the most annoying status game since you cant block all of it. 13 and X has the deadliest

I'm going with petrify, because most of the time I didn't know I was going into an area with enemies that had the spell. Three casts later and it's game over even though I typically grind to be way overleveled.

Doom/Petrify/Gradual Petrify/Zombie/Gradual Zombie would win if FF had the dead/petrified/zombified MC = Game Over aspect (do any FF games have that?). As it stands, they're slightly behind Confuse maybe.

FF9's Freeze/Heat are also a tad annoying. Oh, and Virus. It sucks when you miss out on a ton of AP from a boss.

When I think of confuse I think of two things FFT, one of my characters was confused and used an elixer on an empty panel.

FF8 my first fight with a malboro it confused my party. Squall used a holy war on the malboro, and then one shot the other two characters and then himself.

In most if not all the games petrify and ko are essentially the same, so any combination of ko and petrify for the party is game over. Zombie and stop also do this in ff9.

True, but I'm talking about the case where only the MC needs to be afflicted for a Game Over. I think some Shin Megami Tensei games do that.

At least where the whole party needs to be afflicted, you generally have time to recover (unless it's a move like Bad Breath and/or you're unlucky).

I suppose with Confuse, getting hit with a physical attack can cure it, like with Sleep. So maybe Doom/Petrify/Zombie are worse after all.

I don't know why this trend caught on with Persona. It wasn't a thing P1 and 2. Not to mention SMT dropped this gimmick at IV.
