Publishing executives SAY that, and try to push it as the dominant narrative because it's easier to monetize multiplayer, but it's never actually been true.

It's the same reason why they're so gung-ho on the idea of turning every franchise ever into always online massive multiplayer live-service open world models, because regardless of whether or not players actually WANT them, they're the easiest types of games to really squeeze money out of.
