I found Dragon Quest IV and V and Final Fantasy IV to be 6/10 at most while Final Fantasy VIII and Xenogears were close to perfect 10s. I feel much more immersed in PS1 and forward, probably because there is more emphasis on atmosphere, story and character development, while NES and SNES JRPGs were mostly typical good vs. evil.
I will always love Gameboy Pokemon games because nostalgia I guess...
Is my opinion pretty uncommon? Because I see nothing but praise for NES and SNES era JRPGs.
I also find it interesting that nobody seems to care about the censorship of these older games from their original Japanese versions. The censorship of JRPGs back then was probably the worst in history, equal or worse than even 4kids anime dubs.

FF4 is kinda lame. You gotta go deeper!

Here's my top list, in no particular order

Sweet Home
Final Fantasy 6
Paladin's Quest
Lufia 2
Metal Max (NES)

Action-JRPGs
Soulblazer/Illusion of Gaia
Dragon View
Crystalis
Secret of Mana/Evermore... for story, Evermore has some rather good heartpunchers

I still adore those old games, but different people experience different shades of nostalgia. What's fun for me might be excrutiating for you.

In the days before the Internet, nobody really knew about this. Even in the days when the Internet was first around, this information wasn't widespread.

Also, some games OVERCAME the censorship with genuine creativity - and is the main reason these games are so beloved.

The direct translation version of FF6, for example, is very sterile.

Lufia 2

I decided to look into this, and apparently there's a DS remake. I would probably just want to play that one.
Is it connected to Lufia 1? Might watch a Let's Play of the first one on Youtube or something.

The DS remake DESTROYS the game. SNES only

edit: It's a loose prequel to Lufia 1, so ironically you should play it first.

How so?
The reviews seem overwhelmingly positive and the game is still affordable too.

Lufia 2 is very puzzle heavy, and has a unique encounter system, and well, great writing overall...

The remake is like a joke, and changes the puzzles to 3d platforming...

But it's still good as a standalone game, so I can understand the high ratings.
