So they could start job hunting now?

And why do the Bobs got to drop this stuff on me right before the long weekend?

your boss is testing to see if you would snitch, and will fire you if you do

Absolutely not

that is not your responsibility, and if things change and he doesn't get fired you'll look like an asshole for "lying" to him

Does laughing at them each day count as telling them?

If you dont tell than youre basically deep throating the boot of your boss. Why the hell do bosses hate when people have time to find another job.

Seems like information your boss shouldn't be giving you. The first person to know about the firing, aside from the person doing the firing, is the person being fired.

Technically true I guess, but unless that employee reports to you, the boss is a WAAAY bigger asshole for leaking that to you. Thats hella unprofessional, and I would start looking for a new job myself if it were me.

If theyre not an asshole, they deserve to know.

And even if they ARE an asshole, if they have someone who relies on them having this job whos not an asshole, like a kid, they also deserve to know

they're one of five that report to me so it was told for my planning.

they're planning to give them 3 weeks notice though which is interesting.

Well if they're giving three weeks notice, no need to really tell them. They'll find out with plenty of time anyway. Seems like your boss should've told them FIRST if that was the plan all along, though. Pretty unprofessional imo.

This doesn't really sound like a firing, unless it's a performance-based thing and they are being given a probationary period, at the end of which their performance will be judged and a decision will be made. Sounds more like layoffs that the boss ought to be telling them about now.

oh hey this happened to me before

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a test, but I said nothing because the person was an asshole (and anyway it was a temp position, he had a more permanent job he was leaving for in a couple months)

In my experience people stop showing up to work when they know they are being fired. Or 1 day after they put in their "2 weeks" notice. The jobs themselves get left in the lurch just as much as the employees, if not more so.

This

If you think this is something you as a worker need to keep secret, you need to think hard about your shocking lack of self worth. Absolute wage slave.

Any employer worth anything will give them enough severance to have time to find another job. I would tell someone I liked, but I wouldn't bother for someone I didn't like. (Note if I knew they would get no severance I would tell them regardless but I also wouldn't be working for the employer in the first place)
