This is a topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if there is a compelling reason for both characters to be linked (either co-starring in a game ala Banjo & Kazooie, or always appearing together like Callie & Marie from Splatoon).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - LAW Fodder, Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

Note that LAW Fodder is meant to be a tier reserved for the weakest possible characters to put into a contest. A character will only be placed there if at least 3/4ths of the voters for that day agree on the LAW Fodder rating, and no ratings above Low Fodder are given. If either of those conditions are not met, the character will not be eligible for the LAW Fodder tier.

so Proto Man was apparently in previous contests as Protoman. Proto Man is correct according the the wiki.

Anyway Proto Man looked to be around the fodder line in CB9. I'm not sure whether he could have boosted, but I will stick with Fodder Line.

I honestly don't know about Tommy - does Gfaqs care about Power Rangers? I will say High Fodder for him, since the Green Ranger is iconic and I'm sure plenty of voters have nostalgia for MMPR from the 90s.

Mudkip is hard to place. He hasn't been in a contest since i herd u liek mudkipz was a relevant meme. I'm sure it will resurface here if Mudkip appears in a match, which is the main reason I say Fodder Line for it. I honestly think Mudkip is the least popular Hoenn starter without the meme, so I'm not confident in placing it above the fodder line.

This site's userbase is the exact age range and demo to have intense nostalgia for MMPR.

Even though the move bombed it still did ok for something based on a lesser 90s property and there's going to be another reboot now that Hasbro owns it. There's also this huge push now that a toy company owns it to rerelease the old toys with a new shine and stores have trouble keeping a lot of them on the shelf (only the MMPR ones though nobody cares about the rest of the rangers)

I'd say Green would be a Low Midcarder based on the current resurgence and nostalgia baiting by Saban and Hasbro as well as an iconic design and genuine love from this specific age group on GameFAQs. Red might do OK too but Green would truly be the ceiling for franchise strength.

I saw that poll was posted a few topic days ago, but I honestly didn't know it was that recent. Guess I need to keep an eye on PoTD from now on.

I'll bump my vote on Tommy up to Fodder Line. I'm not entirely convinced he would do well against the popular and iconic characters that clear the fodder line.

Looking at 2010 you might be right taking into account Proto was a 16 seed vs 1 seed Snake, who was a beast in that contest. But 2013 results look like fodder line to me. I don't buy that Ike was a Low Midcarder in that contest since he lost to Epona in R2.

That said it is possible Proto Man has boosted since then.

Proto-Man: Fodder Line. Ike himself is the same tier IIRC.

Mudkip: Fodder Line. One of the stronger non-Gen 1 Pokemon, because of the epic memes. I liekd mudkips before I knew about the meme so...

Tommy Oliver: Fodder Line. I really don't know how a Power Ranger would do here, and I'd think
the Red or Pink Rangers would be stronger. But is this the place for it? Maybe.

I agree with Axem, except that I think Mudkip is High Fodder. I just don't think Pokmon after Gen. 2 inherently have much potential.

In the case of Tommy, I would also mention that he's liable to suffer from pic factor and perhaps even name factor (how many people really remember that the Green Ranger was called Tommy Oliver?), plus I'm inherently skeptical about GameFAQs embracing any multimedia character without a strong video gaming legacy.
