19 y/o Andrew Smith, a University of Illinois student who tied a NOOSE and left it in a residence hall elevator was charged with a hate crime

He found some rope in the elevator in Allen Hall over the weekend and tied it into a noose...

University spokeswoman, Robin Kaler said students in the hall at the Urbana campus reported finding the noose and it quickly blew up on social media and a woman who says she was with Smith when he tied the noose reported it to authorities

Smith was arrested and charged with a felony hate crime and misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges

He said he only spent about 30 seconds thinking about his actions and even after looking at it on social media didn't think it was serious enough to turn himself in

His attorney, Audrey Thompson declined to ocmment on it and said her client is a sophomore with enough credits to graduate this year and a GPA of 3.79

He enrolled there in the fall of 2018 and majored in Math as the university said they don't condone acts of intolerance,bias or prejudice

His bond was set at 5000 and is scheduled for another hearing in late October

there is a history in America of black people being lynched with nooses, so they came to be used as a symbol to intimidate black people. I assume hes charged with a hate crime because it looks like a threat.

his story is pretty weird... there was randomly a rope in this elevator and he arbitrarily decided to fashion it into a noose and leave it hanging in the elevator? why would someone do that?

It would make sense as a hate crime if he left it outside a black person's door, or like...some area where black people tend to hang out, or something. But it sounds like he just left it in the public elevator used by everyone. I don't get how this is close to a hate crime unless FT is leaving out relevant details.

Early this year, black employees in the U. of I. system filed a lawsuit saying they were exposed to threats of racial violence, such as nooses, swastikas, KKK garb, racist graffiti and confederate flags. The lawsuit also alleged that university staff members used racial slurs and other racially charged language against black workers.

Seems to be a reoccurring theme at the school.

It becomes racist when they have a very recent history of stuff like

Other racial incidents have inflamed the downstate campus in recent years.

In 2016, someone drew three large swastikas at three campus buildings the same year a university employee was fired for tossing a noose down on a table in front of a black employee.
