You should be fine.

Not everyone is going to host their own domain to get attention from employers, although it can't hurt.

This. Every job interview I've had so far has had me physically log into NeoGAF/ResetERA with my listed e-mail address while they were watching.

As long as the first bit isn't "sunshine_69" or something less than professional/appropriate in the context, I think you'll be fine using Gmail/Hotmail/etc.

In all seriousness though, if you haven't already, just register [email protected] (include any numbers needed if not unique) and use it for all job applications/professional matters. Simple.

[email protected] is actually the best option, imo. Companies are more likely to second-guess you if you use your current work email address, since you should keep all job hunting off your employer's channels. If you're still in school, you can also probably use your university email and be fine.

One of my friends used his university email and it seemed to basically auto-filter out his resume for any position he applied to.

Your email should be something like your first name and last name @ domain
Numbers or a period as a divider is acceptable and arguably encouraged
so [email protected] can be Peter.parker or peterparker73 for example

Traditionally, don't put your birth year in your email. Even Peterparker622 is more professional if you have a reasonably common name

If you have a non-English or more accurately a less western European name, you might want to leave out the surname if you're applying for certain jobs. More chance of a call back. And yes, that is racist and no, you can't sue them or prove that's why you weren't called

Gmail and outlook are seem as the most professional. Your own domain email is also fine but that's more of a business thing or for very minor industries, usually when you have a website listing accomplishments or something, for academia or a very long career in say stem or something

What's wrong with birth year in your personal email?

Depends on the employer unfortunately but I'd say the bigger risk is simply the chance that someone will make a typo if your email address is very long or has spelling which is not common. I wouldn't discourage someone from using their full name though - it's not like the interviewer/recruiter doesn't already know this detail anyway, and hence I don't think would become a form of active discrimination if it were to be.

Discrimination by employers and also they risk being sued. Some won't even accept it if you have a 19xx or 20xx in it

But this is just coming from someone who worked as a recruiter before in Ireland, experiences might differ by country.

Some software will filter out uncommon names, the ages etc or flag them as lower on the list to be looked at. Or they get someone to do it manually.

Interesting. As far as I know that hasn't been something we practice when we engage with external recruiters at my company, and I'd like to think we encourage diversity given I'm Asian in a Western company.

It's when you start going for [email protected] that it becomes a problem

Yes, over 200,000 employees globally.

That's why.
most global companies don't discriminate.
local companies do it more often. They or even regional companies. So a company with offices in France, UK, Germany might prefer candidates from Western Europe

It's very interesting looking at things from the side of hiring

Fair enough - and I know that discrimination does exist all over the world in other companies, big and small. I just wouldn't assume that all companies act in a certain way. I would also acknowledge there's both conscious and unconscious bias which exists.
