I am looking for a new game to play, and all this WoW Classic hype got me excited for an RPG, but I don't have the time to sink into an MMO. I looked at some reviews for MH World, and it looks like they got all the best parts of an MMO here.

My main concern is how hard is it to get the basics? It looks a little daunting how deep the crafting system, leveling, and combat systems appear to be

It's reasonably easy to get into actually, World made the start a bit smoother than it was in past games (and there are various youtubers who have made videos explaining basically everything in case). The crafting is pretty straight forward and there is no leveling up mechanic, your equipment is 100% of your power. The combat will definitely take a while to master but you can get the basics down pretty quick, especially if you pick one of the simpler weapons. The game still is a pretty big time sink overall though.

I seem to be in the minority because I really couldn't get into it. However apparently it is much more fun with friends, of which I have none, so definitely try getting a buddy or two to join you.

World is the best option if you are new to the series. It is easier and smoother than what came before but has a lot less content as a trade off for better graphics. MH has been my favorite capcom series for years.

Before investing money, give Dauntless a try (it's free). The core gameplay loop is similar. If you dig that, you'll most likely like Monster Hunter.

Also dont be intimidated by depth, World especially is not that complex and the series is an action game first and a RPG second.

I've been trying to get into it. My brother bought it for me and I've been playing but it seems a bit tedious these days but so far it hasn't been overwhelmingly bad. I'm like a level 5 in the game right now.

The game is not hard to get into.

But the core of the game is killing a monster many times for its loot to craft armour based on their monster. So you are constantly hopping into the level/map, kill monster, back to hub, hop into level/map, kill monster, back to hub to craft weapons and armour.

If you are into this kinda thing then the game is good. It also helps greatly if you are playing with friends. I cant imagine myself playing this with just randoms.

There's no leveling system so forget about that you get stronger with better equipment

Crafting system is simple, you want this piece of armour? Kill the associated monster a bunch of times until you get all the parts

Combat system varies since there's a ton of weapons that are all unique, you find the Charge Blade incredibly complex and tough to use? use the sword and shield

Oh yeah, good point that certain weapons are bad for beginners. I recommend Greatsword, Longsword, Sword and Shield, or Lance to pick from as a new player.

Only recommend the ranged weapons if you plan on consistently playing a group so I didnt mention it. But yes, the bow is the least complex of the ranged weapons.

Beginner weapons I'd recommend Sword and Shield, Insect Glaive or Longsword.

Greatsword has a higher skill ceiling that requires proper placement and timing, and varies monster to monster.

Actually I think it's a fairly easy one (as long as you learn early that the aerial stuff is very situational and mostly just for lulz), the extract thing is a bit of a pain to get used to collecting but once you do the moveset is pretty simple. It doesn't have wacky meter management and counters like longsword or require charging in place for ages like great sword, for example.

Nah I'd say it's pretty straight forward.

Hardest part is micromanaging kinsect extract bonuses, and using the dust clouds for status effects, but you don't really need to worry about it as a beginner, just get the red juice and go ham.

Fair enough

I still suggest OP try out Dauntless first before investing money into MHW, just to see if this kinda game is up his alley.

It can be super tough to get into. But IF you get into it and it's your type of game it supposedly a classic.

I tried to get into it and couldn't stand it. But, I get that maybe the game isn't for me.

I've never had any issue with randos in any of the MH games, the gameplay itself weeds out people that would want to be 'carried', and generally once you get past the first few monsters (which can be tackled by beginners solo) the only people hunting the later more difficult monsters are people that are either struggling and legitimately looking for help or experience people getting drops for gear.

A rando can troll if they wanted to by dying on purpose until the quest fails for everyone, but I've never encountered that.

I hear God Eater 3 is better.

I played and beat MHW and found it to be fun, but I stopped playing after I beat it. I didn't find farming the same monsters over and over fun. But there have been new dlc monsters and an expansion pack that just released.

Try every weapon & use what clicks.

So true. Went in thinking hammer and longsword would be my cup of tea, but tried out all weapons to make sure. Didn't care for either of them, but hunting horn gave me the smash attacks I love, dual blades are great for my impatient spammy ass, and I would consider the switchaxe my main weapon of choice.

The online mode is basically the same as solo, you're just playing with more hunters, so the monster HP gets adjusted accordingly. It's pretty useful if you're looking to grind items, but it's a double edged sword because your teammates can get careless and easily get carted 3 times.

Just to explain what that is because it hasn't been mentioned yet, the whole party shares 3 lives. If someone dies, they get carted back to camp and has to walk back to the fight. When 3 people cart (could be the same person) then the hunt is failed and everyone walks away with nothing.

When playing online the monsters health get's bumped to accommodate. When playing solo, you get an AI friend (a cat) that will help fight, draw aggro, provide support like healing, give status effects, and lay down traps.

And 100% agree with everyone that says try every weapon first (they give you one of every weapon type in the beginning). Your weapon is your class, and that is the moveset you'll have for the entire game. But you can swap weapons whenever you want, like I would normally have a heavy weapon for the slow monsters and a fast weapon for the fast ones.

The basic gameplay loop is pick a monster, go hunt it, hope it drops materials you need because RNG, craft a bigger weapon, fight bigger monsters, repeat until everything is dead. Just remember that a hunt isn't just walk up and swing your weapon, you'll be there for about 5-20 minutes, so the grind can take a while.

Don't know if it's been mentioned before, but playing the story with friends is a pain in the ass. Everyone has to watch the cutscenes separately, then abandon the quest and join once again.

I've had friends quit the game because they couldn't be bothered to watch the cutscenes to get carried.
