I was in 6th grade in the west and had never heard of them before

Even today I have no idea what the famous buildings out east are. Sears tower vaguely exists in my mind somewhere -- but were the twin towers super famous?

Yes, they were essentially the most iconic part of the NYC skyline for a few decades in any New York-based media, though I never visited NYC until after 2001.

Yeah, I knew about them because I live in NYC and I was also watching the live coverage of the 1992 bombing aftermath, so to me, my reaction was "damn, again?"

Also I knew tons of people that worked there.

Used to go to the observation deck all the time. It was called "Top of the World". The elevator to the top used to reach 50mph, IIRC.

Hmm I dunno if I did actually outside of knowing they were tall buildings in New York City.

I knew there was the Empire State Building but I think I also got that confused with the Chrysler Building.

Yes, I did, and frankly, I always disliked them. They were a tacky obnoxious eyesore.
The event was horrible and in some way or another fucked up all our lives.
But the buildings were extraordinarily unattractive.

It was always eerily silent at the top. I guess being that high, you were above all the city's noise. Even though the elevator was so fast it made your ears pop, one time it just wasn't fast enough. Someone farted on the way down and a lady got so nauseous she almost threw up. The elevator ride took 2-3 minutes (non-stop) I think and she almost didn't make it.

It was also around $20 to get to the platform.

I don't think so, but I might have had them mentioned briefly in a Trivial Pursuit game or when I asked about the Empire State Building being the tallest building when I was younger. So basically probably not, but it's possible.

I wonder if the Empire State is still open air. It was when I went, and I can't imagine the renovations it'd take to enclose it

I was ten years ago, and I'm pretty sure it still is.
Also, there are two levels, I think the topmost is inclosed.

I think it's still open air, but I haven't been to NYC in 3 years. You're right, it would cost a fortune to enclose the Empire State building's observatory. The only advantage the WTC observatory had over the Empire State building observatory was the clear shot of the Statue of Liberty, IMO.

Am Australian, was 10, so no.

Funnily enough I was in Kuala Lumpur on a family holiday at the time and visited the Petronas Towers (I think the buildings that took the prize of world's tallest buildings away from the WTC) during the week of 9/11
