It's also worth pointing out that Uber is already not profitable. If the article is accurate and they're looking at a 20 to 30% cost increase, then they don't even really have the option of staying in California.

No they aren't.
The San Francisco startup handed out $143 million in total compensation to its top five executives last year, nearly all of which came in the form of stock awards.

Banning plastic bags, forcing people to use paper straws, massive homeless population, anti-business practices such as this. No wonder why people are fleeing California for Texas and Colorado.

Statistics have shown otherwise. You can argue the growth rate isn't what it once was, but the population is still continuing to increase.

Edit: nvm increase is from people born here. Oof

This bill could have some really far-reaching affects and unintended consequences. We rely on the gig economy is more ways than people can imagine. This new classification is hurt businesses from many industries. This bill is going to hurt Google & Amazon as well.

Some examples of gig economy - babysitters, nannies, dog walkers, newspaper delivery people, models, actors, voice actors, musicians, writers, editors, people who deliver menus door to door for restaurants and even pornstars. There are so many industries relying on the gig economy, and this bill is going possibly affect all those industries.

This bill is going back to the state Assembly for amendments, but I don't think these politicians understand the consequences of this bill, which was pushed by many divers in the name of "equality".

Big win for the taxi companies, damn. I wonder how much those precious medallions are going to shoot up to in Cali.

What a garbage state.

Those people wont be effected by the bill if they arent under a company that is getting paid off of their work. Like I can ask my neighbor to babysit and pay them, I wont have to employ them. But if I owned a daycare and contracted people to babysit kids instead of making them employees that would be an issue.

Also, plenty of your examples dont fall under the bill at all.

Oh no, now will have to run a business like everybody else, where they get both the benefits and the liabilities. Taxi driver gets in an accident and the company gets involved. Uber driver gets in an accident, and Uber gets to say "fuck you, not our problem" About time that changed.

Yeah, this law isn't something that's being passed because the state gives a shit about freelancers/independent contractors. They're doing this because they see all the sweet sweet tax money they've been missing out on. Uber will still be within their rights to say "fuck you, not our problem" in the regards of providing a job. And that's likely the direction this is going.

This is how business has always ran and it's the right way to do things. Many people don't want full time jobs. I know many people who moonlights as independent contractors because they like the flexibility. California has taken away that flexibility and they may not be able to do it in the future.

This is a clusterfuck of a bill and everyone knows it. Why else would they make so many exemptions? It's like the lobby who bribes the politicians the most gets exempted. They're picking and choosing who they want to succeed. Once they start adding amendments to the bill, there will be more exemptions because they know its going to fuck over different industries if they don't and that's when you know it's a crappy bill.

If this bill existed 10 years ago, a lot of the companies that are being harmed by this today wouldn't have existed. Uber and Lyft wouldn't be what they are today, along with many tech companies. This bill is going to hurt entrepreneurship, it's going to hurt Silicon Valley, it's going to hurt job growth and it could end up hurting California's economy.
