What happened to the color palettes and pure design? The creativity and innovation? The flexibility and compatibility? Now all I see is generic land exploration stimulators and generic wasteland shooting stimulators.

Yawn

I think the issue stems from lack of technology forcing more creative and unique approaches to accomplish things that can just be baked-in these days.

Like you were genuinely impressed at some of the shit devs could pull off with the PS1. Nowadays a reflection in a mirror is nice but otherwise uninteresting.

You'd be surprised just how much of that actually goes into the games themselves.

My problem with modern gaming is that not every triple A game has to be RDR2 or Witcher 3. And I don't mean open world, I mean production values

They're just too big for their own good now.

Seriously, I've played Zelda games for almost 30 years, and BotW is incredible. One of the densest and liveliest open world games ever.

If anybody thinks they're "soulless", they need to look beyond the types of games they're playing or basing this on. I agree it can seem that way from many triple A games, but they don't represent the entire industry. There's so much more variety nowadays.

You get it, man.

Some of these games ask way too much nowadays. I'm a working man, I don't want to come home and make 2% progress in a 500 hour game doing the same shit over and over and over and over again. If I wanted that, I'd play MMOs. All these games nowadays have MMO mechanics in non-MMO games. Collect 10,000 kajiggers. Slay 100 goobers. Slowly, painfully grind to level 100. Explore all these cut-and-paste dungeons. Kill the same 10 enemies over, and over, and over again.

It doesn't help that these big AAA titles are trash and can't entertain past a day or two. Meanwhile games like Yoshi's Island and Super Mario Bros. 3 holds up even to this day.

It does feel that way sometimes.

I guess it depends on what you grew up playing. I only had a Genesis until the late 90s and I primarily played platformers on it (Sonic, Rocket Knight Adventures, Aladdin, etc. etc.) so thats kind of what I was raised on.

I like non-platformers too, but I dont care for overly long games. Like, a few years ago I played Xenoblade Chronicles for the first time, and I loved the characters, story, atmosphere, etc., but sometimes it did feel like a chore to play through... especially all the grinding I had to do. Took me like 80 hours to get through the main story and like... I dont have time for that. I mean, maybe if I didnt have a full time job, friends, other interests, etc. Id play more games like that, but thats just too much for me lol.
