I tried the wiki and what I got is that a green Kai steals goku's body or something, but where they lost me is the time travel aspect, and which green Kai stole the body and where does future trunks factor in

Green Kai (Zamasu) teams up with himself in Future Trunks timeline. In that timeline Zamasu uses the super dragonballs to switch bodies with Goku while his future counterpart wishes for immortality. Theres several fights where Goku and Vegeta basically try and fail to beat them so they have to summon Zeno who just poofs everything. Goku asks Zeno to come back with them to their own timeline.

Wait Just one minute. Future trunk doesn't have dragon balls, piccolo was killed and it's the whole reason why that timeline is so bleak isn't it. Also which zamasu is which. It's weird, it's kinda like if future cell teamed up with present cell. Villains usually don't like to work together or share, even with themselves.

Zamasu from the current timeline is Goku Black.

The *super* dragonballs are the original set even before the Namekians.

*googles* oh you mean they made more dragon balls for the characters to use. This feels like a rabbit hole I'm falling into. Super seems to introduce a whole bunch of lore.

Mostly filler/fanservice, seriously the events of that arc were so completely insignificant afterward I was legitimately impressed.

Bro, I wouldn't worry about the details of the Goku Black arc.

MAJOR SPOILERS IF YOU CARE

From what I remember though, that clip is the future of the current timeline (i.e. our protagonist Goku was going to have that happen to him if Trunks/Goku Black didn't end up showing up in the show).

So first, Trunks came from the future to get help because Goku Black/Zamasu (I think Zamasu is the immortal one) are working to destroy all mortals for whatever reason. Goku Black soon followed, and after a little skirmish, was forced back to where he came from.

We learn Zamasu is currently training under Gawasu to be Supreme Kai of Universe 10. He hates mortals, gets into a sparring match with Goku, loses. Ultimately, he kills the Supreme Kai to get his Time Ring, a ring which Supreme Kais have which give them special time powers (and "duplicate" when a new universe is made due to a time travel split like Future Trunks vs. main canon). When Goku Black originally showed up with Trunks, I believe that split the timeline, which means Goku was killed and body snatched in the original timeline, and the timeline of the show is the offshoot (similar to the Android Saga of Z).

After body snatching Goku, Goku Black looks for a reality without a God of Destruction, because that is the only thing that can stop him (I can't remember why, but it had to do with the Time Ring). He finds Future Trunks' because the Supreme Kai of his reality is dead, which means the God of Destruction is dead. He meets the Zamasu of that reality (i.e. from Universe 10 of that timeline), helps him get the Super Dragon Balls for immortality, and starts his plan to kill all mortals by attacking Earth.

Anyway, Vegeta and Goku go to Future Trunks' reality where Goku Black and Zamasu have been killing everybody on Earth. He does not want to destroy the planet, he specifically wants to kill mortals, and takes his time because he enjoys it. Either way, Goku and Vegeta get their asses handed to them and head back to the original timeline, and this happens a few times. Meanwhile, in battle, Goku Black gets much, much stronger every time he's in a battle.

Our heroes end up using Potara fusion (which is retconned to only be permanent for Kais) to become Vegito and beat up Goku Black/Zamasu. Goku Black and Zamasu similarly decide to fuse and become Fused Zamasu. However, Goku Black never wished himself immortal, only Future Zamasu did. Either way, after some fighting, the Vegito Potara fusion wears out, but some weird shit is going on with Zamasu's wounds because of his mixed mortality/immortality. Trunks uses the hope of the people to power up his sword and kill Fused Zamasu. However, he ends up not dead at all, and suddenly fuses with the entirety of existence, killing/destroying everything. Goku gets the idea to summon Zeno (the sort of god above all in any timeline) using a device he got in a previous season and Zeno decides to destroy everything, effectively destroying the entirety of that reality.

Now they go back to canon timeline and ask Beerus to delete Zamasu, which I believe deletes him in a special way that he can't come back with time travel (can't remember exactly how). In all this, an alternate version of Trunks' timeline split where Goku Black never shows up is formed, so Trunks and his girlfriend go to that timeline, where they will live, as "second versions" of themselves, in a way.

And, frankly, none of it has mattered since. Literally only Goku and Vegeta participated, but Zamasu/Goku Black/Fused Zamasu were cool character designs and had some cool moves at least.

It's a bit more complicated, but the gist is that in our future, Zamasu encountered Goku somehow which is not really explained and got jealous and took his body using the Super Dragon Balls. Once doing that, he was still afraid the Gods of Destruction would step in, namely Beerus. So he jumped to the Future Trunks timeline where there is no Beerus. He teamed up with that Zamasu who also gathered the Super Dragon Balls and wished for immortality.

When Trunks returned to the our past, Black followed and Beetus became aware of his plan and went to Zamasu and killed him. This split the timeline to where the Tournament of Power took place and where Goku and Vegeta returned to.
