Went with Disc 2 for more freedom (compared to Disc 1) and never cared for Esthar... or Rinoa. But Disc 1 is pretty great.

Disc 4 is the worst last disc of the PSX FF generation.

Eh, VIII has more unique stuff in it than VII does. I love both games' final dungeons though. I think VIII has the better last boss sequence and ending though.

Definitely agree 8 has the better final boss sequence, maybe the best outside of the KH series. It was more my thinking:

7 = can revisit everywhere
9 = can revisit most places
8 = can revisit the Ragnarok's hangar, lol

(okay I guess there are a few more places but really not much)

But let's save that for your "Worst Disc in Playstation FFs" poll ;)

Yeah, not being able to revisit towns and stuff is pretty lame, I agree. I "get" the logic behind it, but still. Usually by the time I get to the 4th disc, I'm ready to finish up the game, but that's just me.

I probably spend the most time on Disc 3 - full map exploration, getting the better GF, level grinding with bonuses, flying on the Ragnarok, finishing off everything you want to do before the end sequence etc. Not a huge fan of the space part, but I quite like the Esthar stuff.

gotta be disc 1 because the sorceress assassination mission is so good. though missile base + battle of the Gardens is solid too.

disc 4 is too short to really be in contention, but Ultimecia's Castle is my favorite FF final dungeon

Disc 1 by a mile. Disc 2 is mostly bad until the Garden battle which is mostly good. Disc 3 features the dumbest thing ever. Disc 4 is just a mediocre gimmicky final dungeon and a final boss fight that drags on far longer than it needs to for a fight that doesn't even try to challenge you.

Ending Spoilers Ahead...

I'm literally watching the final cut scenes of the remaster having just beaten and I am a little confused. Thought I'd post in here as it is FFVIII related :-)

I know about the Stable Time Loop, but Edea says ''In order to die in peace, a sorceress must be free of all her powers. I know...for I am one, too''.

So Edea is already a sorceress before Ultimecia transfers her powers into her? Was she born a sorceress or did another sorceress pass her powers initially? I feel like I've missed something.

It can't be to do with time loop because the Edea in that timeline (where she meets adult Squall) is not part of that loop as she would already know about SeeD and Garden.

I have beaten the game multiple times (fave game ever and all that) and this bit has always struck me as odd, but never really looked into it.

No one's born a sorceress, Edea did indeed get her powers from another one (I think she mentions this at some point). So the same sorceress can have "sorceress" powers from two different ones - Rinoa gaining Edea's & Adel's at the start of Disc 4 for example.

Yes, Edea is already a sorceress when she meets Ultimecia in the ending. She says as much. The reason she takes those powers is because she already has them.

I'm playing the Remaster right now as well, and after NORG reveals that Cid and Edea are married, Cid says that she's been a sorceress since childhood.

And as Rinoa shows, you can take power from multiple sorceresses.

DIsk 1

Disk 2 went off the rails a bit, Disk 3 recovered witih some interesting plot points and set pieces. Disk 4 was the worst.

If FF8 was more of what Disk 1 was, it would have been a top tier FF game, rather than the middling title it ended up being.
