it was made by I think friends and family of those who lost kids at the Sandy Hook shooting

why should they be ashamed? someone else, over on CE called it "tasteless and tacky"

I don't get it. this was a very powerful ad. I think you are missing the message. or you are an NRA fan or something.

That's was a disgusting video and the creators should ashamed.

How about we focus on why a child feels the need to use any type of violence on other child as a solution to a problem instead of blaming guns?

the problem is both guns and mental health issues. the ad didn't even specifically attack guns. you are being pretty defensive about this

and again like I said to the other person, the people who made this lost or know those who lost children at sandy hook.

The ad did nothing to address the mental health issue and guns aren't the issue. You can replace gun with hammer and you'd still have the same problem of using violence as a problem solving tool. The culture of violence is the issue, not the tools.

It's more disturbing that someone made an ad designed to terrify parents and children about going back to school.

If you don't want more school shootings, don't focus on the shootings, you focus on the events that lead to the shooting.

I mean, the POINT of this video is to be horrible and make people feel uncomfortable. Because people in general are far too comfortable with school shootings. It's happened so many times that it barely matters to anyone that wasn't directly impacted.

If you think that's uncomfortable, imagine living through it.

It's not about blaming guns at all. It's about knowing the signs that show a child may be thinking of harming themselves or others so that these sort of events might be stopped before they happen. So that the child can be helped before they reach that point of doing something awful.

You don't even have to go to their website to know what they're about. Just watching the video to the end. "School shootings are preventable when you know the signs."

Guns are absolutely the issue. You think a 20 year old could kill six adults and 20 children with a hammer?

Hell, the day after the Sandy Hook shooting there was a similar incident at a primary school in China, except due to lack of guns the guy was armed with a knife instead and went on a stabbing spree. Know how many people he killed?

Zero. He killed zero people. He attacked and wounded children and adults before he was finally subdued, but all of them survived.

There's a reason why the US, which has ~1/20th of the world's population, accounts for over a third of its mass shootings.

At the end it says "School shootings are preventable when you know the signs", meaning you can look for language and patterns of behavior in people who may potentially become a threat. No where in the video do they blame guns. Pretty much the opposite of what you're saying.

Easy access to weapons of such easy destruction definitely does not help. I am also drawing a complete blank on the last time a school kid attacked their school with a weapon here in this country. Definitely not with guns, but also not with a hammer.

Edit: That commercial is so dark... But uhm, was I alone in expecting a new message sound after the fade to black followed by a gun shot?

America has a culture of violence starting at the top with warmongering and profiteering. It's easy to blame a tool when you can't accept that our society is to blame for the increased violence. Streaming for more gun control is like asking for a bandaid when you actually need brand new organs.

I am not just blaming the tool, I just mean that the fantasy becomes more tangible, with a weapon that is easier to do greater damage with and is more feared. Especially when that weapon is relatively easy to acquire.

Terror with a gun is just simpler. And that is me putting more blame on the human psyche, not just guns.

If they really wanted to make a video properly addressing violence in schools, they should have made a video explaining how bullying and ostracizing others creates the mentally that only by resorting to violence can they get respect with friendship and understanding being the best prevention.

Instead, it's a video about how terrifying an unhinged shooter is without actually providing any sort of solution. "Know the signs" is something the school administrators and parents need to know on both sides, the bullied and the bullies. The kids need to be taught to get along.

Well, the Sandy Hook shooting was perpetrated by a 20 year old man who hadn't gone to that school since 5h grade. He didn't seem to be targeting anyone specific and his motive remains a mystery. School bullying is a huge problem but it's not the only reason.
