Well, with the rules the way they are now, it's almost impossible to recover a traditional onside kick anymore. The NFL needs to do something about that.

It was worth it anyway since it insured the Chiefs wouldn't return the ball which in essence gave the Ravens an extra timeout (this was also very possibly their goal to begin with). Their terrible 3rd down defense getting beaten badly by a screeen in an obvious screen situation made it not end up mattering though.

You know, I think the Bucs run defense is just legitimately very good this year.

They didn't get fooled by just a screen, they got fooled by a ridiculously smart playcall by Andy Reid where they hard-faked a WR screen to the left, when it was really a RB screen to the right.

Wasn't that only because it was a fair catch? When the commentators mentioned that after the TD I immediately thought, "But the clock starts on a return so that's only really true if they get a touchback."

Or, of course, a fair catch, but I'm not sure you gameplan the opponent having the presence of mind to make the fair catch signal in that situation. If it wasn't fair caught I think the clock should have started running on the catch (same for a traditional onside kick of course) and while it'd be an immediate tackle a second ticks off in all probability, dropping it to the two minute warning.

I think the only foolproof way to preserve the two-minute warning in that situation is to kick it through the endzone for the touchback.

so I think Kyle Allen is the best of the backup QB group so far. I was pretty confident it would be Rudolph but LOL. Bridgewater might have a claim to it if he just dumps it off to Kamara or Thomas every play though, because how hard can that be?

Eh, not really. It was a fine play desgin, but the only guys to cover the receiver they were faking a screen to were already on that side of the field to cover the 3 receivers lined up on that side of the field. The safety even bounced back inside to cover Kelce after initially going out, so the screen to that side didn't even fake anyone out enough to matter.

The Ravens LB that mattered most on the play ran right by the running back and watched the ball go past him because he pushed too far up the field towards the QB. On a 3rd and long where the offense wants to make sure to keep the clock running, you absolutely have to cover the RB.

I didn't see the Ravens' previous kickoff, and I'm not sure what the field conditions/footing were/was like at the time, but I'd agree that if they could have gotten a guaranteed touchback by kicking through the back of the end zone, that would have been the safer option.

But the way they kicked it with it being so high and short, fair-catching is more like a worst case scenario. You have a chance to dislodge or catch the football yourself if he doesn't call for it, and if he does, it preserves the clock for you. Maybe I'm off base here and am giving too much credit where it isn't due, but the Ravens are usually pretty excellent on special teams, so I'm assuming they had practiced that play/kick a good amount before and had a thought-out plan going into it.
