I doubt there are any perfect people with not so much as a smudge in their past. Something they did or said somewhere in their life was controversial to someone. Now, whether they uphold the behavior through their entire life is a different story.

but as a practical matter, why any particular age. What is the criteria for choosing any particular birthday? Puberty is a logical one, but that's not what is chosen. Age of majority is a logical one (and that itself is arbitrary), but that isn't what it usually is either.

And why can you have sex with someone, but they can't have a picture of you naked? Why is it illegal to have a naked picture of yourself if you are underage?

Obviously, the issue with young people being involved in those things is that they can be exploited. But people of all ages are exploited, how do you pick a line for when it's a problem or when it's not.

That arbitrary line -is- the practical matter. There's no real way for us to gauge whether a person is ready to handle life without a guardian, but in recognition of the need to protect young people up to a certain point, we went with 18. Your sexuality doesn't change based on the gender identity of whoever you're attracted to. For example, if you're a straight dude and you see someone you think is a hot lady and then it turns out it's a trans dude... being attracted to him doesn't make you gay, or even bi.
