Has anyone ever filed a return on TurboTax for free?

Supposedly, if you make less than $66,000 a year, you are able to file your return for free but companies that make tax preparation software, like Intuit, the maker of TurboTax, have spent untold millions lobbying to prevent the IRS from offering free tax prep and filing services.

I use TurboTax every year to file for free, but only the Federal filing is free and only if you dont need to file anything complicated. You still have to pay to file State taxes and Federal taxes too if you have to do all the extra forms for anything in particular.

That sounds like its not really worth it at that point...

I've done my own taxes for about the past 33 years. It's not really all that hard, though the IRS did throw a curveball this last year when they redid all the damn forms.

Yes, and until this year (2019, filing for 2018 income) it was free.

This year, TurboTax instituted some bs hidden rule that if you made over $1500 in bank interest, you need the paid version. I know it's a new rule, b/c I made about the same bank interest the prior year (~ $2000 both years) and didn't run into that bs.
To add insult to injury, not only was the federal tax filing no longer free, but they offered free state filing...but it didn't come w/ the paid version...that's an additional $20-$30!
My friend happened to have a physical disc of TurboTax (apparently they still exist) that he ended up not using, so he gave it to me, and then I re-did all the info through my state's website to get free state returns.

No idea what I'll do next year. It's fucking bs that just b/c the four digit number I enter is slightly larger than the arbitrary four digit number limit they chose, I need to fork over $80. Really complicates things for Intuit, I guess.

for the past few years, turbotax has made it a point to advertise that both federal and state file for free.

i had one of the most complicated taxes i'd ever seen last year, and still, free.

I used the free H&R block on lone thingy. With the exception of when the company I work for merged with the current company and all the stock holders got money. That made it complicated so I had to go to a tax prep to make sure everything was right.

I dunno how it is now, but before if you filed a 1040EZ form it was free to file federal. The forms got totally redone last year so I'm not sure anymore. I'd been working for H&R Block for 8 tax seasons, so I got my shit done free anyway (especially since I worked 5 as a tax pro so I just did my own on our office software)

I've used TurboTax for past fourteen years or so and it has worked great for me. No complaints. It actually gets easier to use every year. They've made a ton of improvements to it.
