She knows, this is from the same speech to the UN today:
The popular idea of cutting our emissions in half in 10 years only gives us a 50% chance of staying below 1.5C degrees, and the risk of setting off irreversible chain reactions beyond human control.
Maybe 50% is acceptable to you. But those numbers dont include tipping points, most feedback loops, additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution or the aspects of justice and equity. They also rely on my and my childrens generation sucking hundreds of billions of tonnes of your CO2 out of the air with technologies that barely exist. So a 50% risk is simply not acceptable to us we who have to live with the consequences.
To have a 67% chance of staying below a 1.5C global temperature rise the best odds given by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change the world had 420 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide left to emit back on 1 January 2018. Today that figure is already down to less than 350 gigatonnes. How dare you pretend that this can be solved with business-as-usual and some technical solutions. With todays emissions levels, that remaining CO2 budget will be entirely gone in less than eight and a half years.
There will not be any solutions or plans presented in line with these figures today. Because these numbers are too uncomfortable. And you are still not mature enough to tell it like it is.
You are failing us. But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us I say we will never forgive you. We will not let you get away with this. Right here, right now is where we draw the line. The world is waking up. And change is coming, whether you like it or not.

If you want to read more about tipping points and the problems with hitting 1.5C/2C etc, this is a link to the Hothouse Earth paper from last year that's been the backbone of a lot of the recent push for more aggressive climate policy

I thought someone relevant in power was saying this and I was kind of happy. She's like 16 or something.

Gotta wait for that brain to age like a fine cheese before you get to be in power. Then you get to be smart. New information just bounces off your brain like the piece of refined steel it is at that point.

That has no effect, sadly.

Poor people and minorities tend to live in areas that are more polluted despite not creating much of that pollution, proportionally while the reverse is true. Or something like that. Maybe.

I've been talking about this recently.
When you break it down, agreed, we are.
Maybe this is why there is no "advanced life" by our definition in the universe because that means wiping out a planet and "advancing" far enough to do it to another planet and repeat. We're an infection on a universe and it can only hope we limit ourselves to one "body" of the universe.

The funniest part of most of the comments in this topic is you're proving her to be correct. I can't help wondering how many of you are over 55 and under 55. The fact is the earth will survive but we most likely won't. Few people understand the gravity of this problem like this young lady does. Some of us saw this coming 50 years ago. Just because I was 15 then and she's 16 now doesn't make us wrong.

I do agree we are no better than parasites the way we've acted since the industrial revolution. Actually more like a virus.

Cutting our emissions in half in ten years is NOT possible. There is no way whatsoever we can do that unless the population drops.

We are growing, and growing populations create more carbon emissions.

If we want to make changes, we need to target corporations, mass reproduction (lots of countries have insanely high birth rates - which is why we are emitting more and more - not capitalism), and then look at changing the average citizen.

Not even close. Even if we turned the world in to a nuclear wasteland, we'd survive in underground bunkers. The only thing stopping us very quickly killing off our emissions is the risk to habitats of pretty animals.

If there was any danger of us actually dying, we'd terraform the planet and drop the world's temperature 2c in 10 years.

50 years ago you "saw" the world would be uninhabitable by 2000. The predictions are deeply misleading using vastly inadequate information to extrapolate real limits.

The reality is we are technilogically capable of terraforming and colonising Mars if we wanted to, we'd just rather take our time and enjoy our luxurious lifestyle while we wait. There's no threat to humanity, just threat to profit margins.
