Yikes. On pages 179 and 180, she praised Venezuela for leveraging leftist policies to reduce poverty rapidly. That aged rather poorly.

I mean, this book was written back when leftists still pointed to Venezuela's leaders as beacons of the left. I wonder what her response is now a few later after Venezuela's chaotic collapse.

Surely it didn't stop being run by leftists in the handful of years since she wrote this. <_<

At least she rightly blames the left for "extractive progressivism"

Humans have accelerated and are accelerating climate change by burning fossil fuels, and if we don't stop soon and invest on fixing the problems we are causing then we won't have a nice planet by the time you and I are old.

It's true. At this rate the closer we get to the year 2100 the worse the heat waves, crop failures, and migration crises will be due to climate change. Unless we invest now in smart grids, renewables, better agricultural practices and an evolved society.

This is extremely basic stuff. Even a child can understand the science.

i'm kinda curious if more ecologically sustainable practices would be embraced if we adopted more sustainable (see: more traditional, less car-centric) forms of urban planning and loosened regulations on what people can do on their own residential properties (e.g., urban farming and rainwater collection)

people are already noticing the savings value of of solar panels; i'm sure demonstrating economic value in this manner for other sustainable practices would go a much longer way than shoving it down people's throats by banning less ecologically friendly alternatives

also, federal (and state, for that matter) governments needs to get over themselves and encourage policies that empower economic and political local autonomy so municipalities manage what value they create, rather than consuming in excess with funds from the hypervisor, so to speak

and with that in mind, the federal government needs to get its budgetary and monetary **** together - that's all ultimately consumption of resources and generation of emissions and waste

Fuck off dude, this is exactly what I mean

A tax on a necessity is not the answer. Go after the corporations, the governments, etc. who are the ones who are actually causing the problem.

At least Greta is pushing for change on at the macro level - however, I am sure more governments will punish individuals instead of working to rid the real problems.

I dont think its not caring. Its just that getting rid of everything that supposedly causes climate change will bring us back to the stone age.

That would be cool. Then we could see more local communities directly managing their own decentralized solar / wind farms, telecommunications networks, etc. Managed for the sake of reliability and sustainability, not profit.

Not true at all. While hyper-consumption definitely needs to end, we'd still be able to life satisfying and comfortable lives even if we took radical steps towards ending climate change.

the largest polluter in the world is the US military

if you significantly downsize the military you immediately make a huge impact

blaming individual consumers is a fools game
