In Besaid, X-Death is taking on the trial as the Besaidians stand and wait.

Wakka tells Tidus of the dangers awaiting the high summoner X-Death. Tidus is like "oh crap what if the summoner dies!!!"

As he shows some concern, the temple collapses, as X-Death grew tired of the annoying puzzles and decided to skip them. X-Death walks out with Valefor under his command. Wakka is like "OMG THE TEACHINGZ YOU CAN'T JUST BLOW UP THE TEMPLE YA??" and he and a handful of Besaid Aurochs take fighting stances. X-Death explodes the lot of them with Fire 3.

Tidus is like "oh no" and X-Death says Sin's Toxin must have gotten to Tidus and he'll help him get home with his mastery of the dimensions if he can help him get through the rabble between the temples on this pilgrimage without raising too much of a fuss. Tidus doesn't know what's going on but goes along with this terrible man cause he just wants to get home. Lulu also goes along with as a guide as this powerful mage may be able to destroy Sin once and for all, methods be damned.

And this is just the first act. Don't you see what a great game this would be?

I really question some people on their idea of "character" when using it as sort of a backhanded insult. Especially if I look at things they support or have supported... boggles my mind how X NPCs tend to catch so much flak.

A character doesn't need a bucketload of dialogue and screentime to actually establish a concrete likable character, which is the usual rallying cry of the character development elitists who rag on the earlier FF games as though the characters from them are "lesser" by default.

But there is some base level they need to have an appeal that makes sense. Like I would save Minwu or maybe Leon but I wouldn't see any sort of appeal to saving Josef despite the lot of em being from FF2. Josef just does less to establish himself as unique and appealing and has a bit less time than the other two. To put it in perspective all of his special moves in Record Keeper involve him being crushed by a boulder because that's pretty much all he does in the game.

Braska, like Josef, falls beneath that threshold. He's basically a plot device and I can name about as much about him as I can about Josef. That doesn't feel like exactly the right word I'm looking for but he's more of something that is assumed to have existed and is necessary backstory in the plot than a dude who has any real appeal of his own as a character. It's not his fault per se-- his story just isn't what the game is, but I have trouble thinking anyone who is saving him is really a fan of the character. It's not like someone like Vayne where he actually has enough for me to see an appeal and it just isn't quite enough to work for me-- I literally don't know or remember a thing about Braska as a character and not as a role in backstory.

As for why X NPCs get the flak that's just what gets nominated

I can't name any characters as minor nominated from any other game. If people started nominating I dunno, Arvis or Madeline from FFVI or Elder of Mysidia from FFIV or Choco Billy from FFVII I'd say the same kinda stuff. None of these are characters I find memorable or particularly likable in what time they have despite having arguably more plot significance and/or characterization than characters like Dona or Isaaru or Braska.

I agree on Braska, and I honestly can't remember a thing about Isaaru, but I don't think it's fair to lump Dona in there. Dona definitely has personality (aka being a rude condescending asshole). I don't like her, but she's a real character for sure.

Yeah I said and/or for a reason I agree Dona has a defined character there but she's completely meaningless. Dona I mostly have trouble figuring why people would like the character, but then again I like Leblanc so *shrug

On the flip side Braska is plot significant but unmemorable in terms of what the character is.

Isaaru is the worst of both worlds.

What's his personality?

Stern and resolute, much like his daughter, but not uncaring. Passionate, but not prone to impulse, at least not to the degree of Young Auron and Jecht. Someone had to keep those two in check. You might not think him as interesting as the other two, but that doesn't make him a non-character.

What do you like about him?

Dude was badass enough to have a forbidden love affair with an Al Bhed, a formerly despised race in Spira, make a baby with her and get away with it scotfree. Then he became a High Summoner, knowing exactly what it would cost him, just to keep that child and all of Spira safe for a fleeting year or two.

Can you describe an appeal to him whatsoever in terms of things that occur on screen?

That's unfair as you know damn well most of his development occurs off screen in the form of sphere flashbacks and implications. Put it this way: If you have maybe just a little imagination you can infer your own conclusions.

If you were to replace Yuna with him in FFX, how would things change, if at all?

Everything changes! Even beyond the obvious of Jecht and Auron's stories being completely revamped. Yuna only makes her decision because she can't follow down the same path her father did and let the spiral continue.

You probably can't answer most of these questions without googling a script for the meager amount of flashbacks he's in and forcing something.

Spoilers: I've never even played a FF before VI. Take anything I say regarding those characters with a grain of salt until I actually play those games. This is all in good fun. Braska is totally a character though. He might not be your favorite character, or the deepest one, but a character he is. And much like Braska on his ill-fated pilgrimage, I will support X-0 to the bitter end.

Honestly the main reason I think X gets more support for its minor characters is probably the voice acting, like we all know Ride Ze Shoopuf Guy or stay away from the summoner but like, it helped add depth to characters like Maechen and Dona. Its also extremely nostalgic which most games after just arent. Id probably be more excited over Rin or Nimrook over, say, Cid Raines.

Braska is basically a character in the same way Link is one. What's presented is really generic and you need to fill in a lot of blanks for yourself. Too many for my tastes.
