I have literally never seen someone wearing a mask in public here outside of a cosplay event. But the default in Japan is for everyone to just leave you alone so it's not really required.

I honestly wish that were a thing in North American society. If youre sick, you should wear the mask instead of coughing all over everything and spreading germs. Also it tells everyone else that youre sick, so they wont bother you. When I was in school, the days I had a really bad cold and no voice would always be the days that suddenly everyone wanted to talk to me.

I live in northern California, and I see it sometimes.
