Retail, you can't hit students.

I used to manage a gamestop. And I will say it was one of the the jobs I enjoyed the most. In all honestly, if I won the lottery and no longer needed to work, i would find a small box retail store and work there.

School. Retail is hell. Plus you can teach kids about subjects that interest you... Like history! And if they get mouthy you can punish them with stuff like extra homework and detention instead of having to smile and take it when someone insists that their coupon for salmon is valid for tuna as well.

"Below average district"

I highly doubt they give a shit if you give them homework or detention

So you're saying that students in below-average districts intentionally ignore teachers and attempts to provide discipline and order? That they're inherently unruly and dis-respectful?

Used to teach children on a volunteer basis. Loved it then but the higher ups didnt like me so I got axed.

Dealing with children, even at middle school, is in my opinion easier than full grown adult customers and co-workers. In my experience, Kids can appreciate an adult that they know genuinely cares about them and looks out for their best.

Adults, in my experience, are petty. Theyll hate you for the stupidest reason at all and try to drag you down.

Meh. I was about to go off on some rant about that being racist and acting all offended and everything; but I don't have the heart for it. It's like... why bother when there is already so much toxic hate around already? It's just not worth it and adding to a problem that needs fixing instead of exploiting for cheap comebacks. If a student refuses to listen to me and accept my punishments it's because I've failed them as a teacher and not given them reason to look up to, and respect, me. Both the superior and those whom serve them have a mutual duty to each other and I need to hold up my end of the bargain as the superior teacher. That means being enthusiastic about the subject I teach, teaching it in a proper manner, being respectful, kind, and just to my students, and treating them like they can become something greater instead of being either resigned to hopelessness or a sneering superior who sees them as inconvenient burdens.

@Unbridled9

Overall I agree with you, especially in treating all students well helping them to see the potential and not having the Im better than you mentality At the same time Theres only so much we can do.

one high schooler that I know of, who although appreciate how much his teacher cared, didnt give a crap about his education because he was making so much money on the drugs he was selling on the side. He even said why does this matter when he made more money than the teacher.

For the younger students that show great potential, Theyre some parents that just dont give a crap on how well their kids do. Youd like to foster that talent and help it grow but if they have parents who could care less, its going to hurt the students enthusiasm.

Lastly, school culture dont have that pull yourself up by your bootstrap mentality anymore. I know of kids who go into class and expect to be given a writing utensil every single time, even in exams.

So, even if you could be the best possible teacher ever, the parents job to raise their children right as well as the students own responsibility plays a part and its something you cant control.

Edit: all of the stuff I mentioned are exceptions and not the norm.

I still vote to be a middle school teacher over retail. Because in probably 95% of place I worked at, Ive always been treated as an inferior person; however, Ive never been treated that way by kids (mostly) which is why Id rather teach over retail.
