I just beat it for the first time

Why are there Mario enemies?

What in the ever loving fuck is "and it was all the dream of a flying whale, the end. Also link is lost at sea"?

I can't answer that one, but I hope it leads to Wart/Mamu being reintegrated back into the Mario series.

It was only the 4th Zelda game ever made, and originally for the original gameboy. The mario stuff in it is merely crossover.

It was more of a parody of Zelda basically. No Triforce, Zelda herself, nothing.
Hence the stuff like phones existing or the Kirby monster or the goombas, etc

The story is Link killed Gabon and is now adventuring elsewhere. He gets caught in a storm.

The Wind Fish is some sort of mystical entity whose dreams can physically manifest. Link ends up stuck in this manifestation.

The nightmares are trying to take over, because if the wind fish wakes up, the dream will be over and theyll disappear.

There are Mario enemies because Nintendo has (or had) a sense of humor, and the entire game was kind of cheeky.

According to the Japanese LoZ manual, Manhandla is a large Piranha Plant from the Super Mario series, and Digdogger is a giant Unira from Clu Clu Land.
And multiple houses in LttP got portraits of Mario.
And Turtle Rock got Chain Chomp enemies.
And the Fairy Fountain / File Select theme is a remix of the music that plays in Water Land from Super Mario Bros 3.
