I googled Kansas City and got 54 different cities using the same name and the most famous ones share a state border, meaning you can see both cities at one time. How is that for confusing?

Lebanon and Salem are biblical names and colonists were very religious. Many American cities were founded by European immigrants (duh) and so some were named after the European cities where they were born, like Springfield, Essex.

There's fun reasons behind most names.
Like Kolibri said, Salem is a biblical town so a lot of folks borrow names from the Bible. In the case of Portland, Portland, OR was named after Portland, ME. Two guys claimed ownership of the land and both wanted to name it after their hometowns. One was from Portland, ME and the other from Boston. They flipped a coin and Portland won. A simple flip of the coin could have made it the Boston of the West. Mountain View is likely pretty explanatory. Sometimes people have the same overused idea in every region. ... Copied to Clipboard!
