He's not miscast in Scott Pilgrim.
Nah, he totally is.

No he's not. What are you guys even complaining about

Pretty sure I also posted my reasons. But when it comes to my problems with the movie, his miscasting is relatively minor. Most of the character growth and many of my favorite bits were in books 4 and 5, which were cut almost completely from the movie. It's just a case of being unfilmable in movie format, which is understandable; I have the books, and people who only watched the movie wouldn't see much wrong with it (apart from likely wondering at the end why Scott ends up with Ramona instead of Knives, when the book takes the time to illustrate - pun intended - how Scott and Ramona are for better or worse a perfect match.)

So apart from the obvious miscasts, I try not to rag on the SP movie nearly as much as I would something like Game of Thrones.

Just because he's different from the books or whatever? I can understand that being upsetting if you liked the books and wanted a faithful adaptation but I think he did fine in the role as it was portrayed in the movie. What was bad about it?
Part of the reason, as others as point out is that he's essentially just playing himself, or rather, the same roles he's typecasted in other movies or whatever.

And yeah, not everything needs to be a 100% faithful adaption to work, but the thing is; the movie itself goes out of its way to paint him similar enough to his comic book counterpart what with how other characters describe aspects about him. And Michael Cera playing Michael Cera just doesn't fit that character.

Like someone said earlier, he was probably just casted because he was the more fairly well known young Canadian actor in that age range that have some kind of wide enough appeal thanks to stuff like AD and SB. He was entirely carried by the rest of the cast.

Iirc the last two books weren't made yet while they were doing the movie. So they were basically just winging it during the last half of the film.

So you admit he's not miscast

Dude, I feel Scott Pilgrim is a fantastic movie, but upon reading the first comic volume, it's glaringly obvious that Cera is a miscast for Scott. For starters Scott in the volume had confidence and charm in what he does while Cera's Scott was straight up awkward.

led pls; A distinctive personality trait being different as well as a distinct difference in energy level is a pretty fair reason to feel that someone was miscast.

I mean idk. There are lots of changed made to characters for various reasons and I think they can be justified in various ways. For instance, in the main character in Adam Sandler's remake of the Longest Yard doesn't beat up his wife in the first couple minutes of the movie and the character's misanthropic characteristics are vastly downplayed. That's partially because Adam Sandler and Bert Reynolds have two different styles, it's also because people in 2008 found beating up your wife a lot more off-putting in a comedy than they did in the original time frame.

Based on the descriptions of the character here I can imagine there were similar concerns. Michael Cera's awkwardness makes his dating and cheating on a younger girl more palatable in the format than if he were confident and good with women.

But idk I should read the books and watch the movie again to see what I think

Arrested Development was awesome. "Was". Seasons 1 - 3.

EDIT: I also really do enjoy Scott Pilgrim, as well as his role in Wet Hot American Summer. First Days of Camp? Can't remember which season he was on, but he was a funny lawyer.

He has Scott's awkwardness, but not his energy.

That being said, he wasn't terrible as much as miscast for the movie.

Reasons he was chosen to play Scott Pilgrim:

1) He's Canadian

Cera was a great fit for Scott Pilgrim, considering he's been typecast as self-centered, needy, and oblivious. My first thought on seeing him in Scott Pilgrim was, "This works."
