I think they're more or less glorified celebrities at this point. People respect their royal blood but they don't have much direct governmental influence. But also, they still have a lot of social influence and stuff. I dunno a lot about the specifics but Diana, for example, was involved in a lot of charity stuff.

Tourism isn't a good enough reason to prop up a class of "royal blood." It continues to devalue the average person by stating there is something inherently special about this set of particular human beings. Monarchs are a symbol of a barbaric, violent past that have no place in our modern setting.

Tradition is a large part of what keeps them as they are, but what they actually do is drive tourism around the globe and act as figureheads for various political affairs/drives.

Don't get me wrong, I'd vote republic but at the end of the day I also appreciate our country's heritage and that we were a country of the Commonwealth with the Queen as our head of state.

People usually go to Buckingham Palace to see changing of the guards, but if there was no royal family to "protect", why would there need to be so many guards?
