My phone said 3:50, so I told them, "It's ten 'til four." This was met with blank expressions, followed by "What?!?" I thought I must have said it too fast ("tentil four,") so I repeated myself, slower. They're both silent and staring, and I'm a little confused. At an impasse, we just looked at each other. Finally, the one said to the other, "Oh! It's 3:50!!"

I asked them, "What if I had said it was quarter to four?" No, neither one understood. I asked, "What if I said it was half past three?" No, they didn't know what that meant, either.

Everything is digital. They don't understand expressions of time.

tbf, I rarely hear these expressions anymore. At work we want precise times. Every minute of lost productivity is considered money wasted. Things are more hustle-and-bustle now than in the 90s.

In any case, I recall an article discussed on this board about how the new generation of kids don't know how to read a clock. A lot of people handwaved it off as obsolete and it's not a problem if kids don't know to read it. And it is true, for day to day purposes, it's not a problem at all. But it's stripping kids of general knowledge that they can draw upon for when they are tasked with solving new problems in the future.

I teach in a high school and I can confirm there are kids who dont know what quarter til or quarter past means.

While I understand expressions of time, it always bugged the shit out of me when someone would say "Quarter past ____" or "Quarter till ____" or whatever else. Just say the exact time (it takes less time to say and allows for more accurate time to be said if, for example, the time is 4:17... yet, some people still use "Quarter past 4" even if it's not exactly 4:15 and it's something like 4:17, which is highly annoying).

Ive noticed that the quarter til thing is commonly used in the south. Things just go a little slower down there and if it's close to 4:15 or whatever, just say quarter past 4. We'll get there when we get there. Don't worry about it.

Generally it's to approximate, vs giving an exact time. So if it's 4:13-4:18, you would say "quarter after" instead of giving the time down to a minute.

I used to live in a region where they would say "quarter of," and one time I asked if that meant quarter after or quarter to. It means both. So confusing.

Funny story. My wife's grandmother died a couple years ago at the age of 95. She went through the depression, so she turned into mild hoarder and a deal enthusiast. She would take anything that was free, even if it was useless. The sugar packets from the table at restaurants, flyers for stuff, you name it. And she would take all of them.

Sometime this decade, she asks Mrs. DevsBro "what is a-p-p-s?" She had gotten a flyer from somewhere talking about them. Mrs. DevsBro tells her "it's something you put on your phone." Later, she caught her looking hard at the flyer and her landline telephone, lol.

I wasn't there, so when Mrs. DevsBro told me the story, I had to ask "did the flyer mention they were free?" She says "Huh. Yeah, probably."
