Not going to lie, there is great schadenfreude in Lightning failing in a year of XIII and not getting the series first win.

but that lawyering day will never be defeated ever

the saddest lawyering for me is when Drak was saving Ashe early on the last save and me following it up with Setzer not thinking the round was done

not only did I want Ashe, but losing Drak 5 rounds hurt other characters I back :|

9 fewer saves than yesterday but the round was 26 minutes shorter.

Day 83 had the same number of saves as Day 85 yet today's was 14 minutes shorter.

Well I couldn't fall asleep so did some quick and dirty stats on the posted rankings (plus my own), which end up looking the same whether looking at average ranking or median ranking:

Optimal final: Kefka vs. Auron

Worst final: Quina vs. Aerith...

No love for the flower girl. Of course nobody had her ranked higher than me but none of her mains posted their rankings either.

I'm saying it's not surprsing that he's not popular considering he doesn't have a lot of likeable qualities. I mean there's a reason the vast majority of villains lose, most people don't like them as much as the heroes (of course there are exceptions)

Basically, villains don't have as broad of an appeal as heroes, for the most part. Not limited to villains cause characters like Palom have few likeable qualities too

Also I don't think I would be pals with Auron

Honestly feel like most of the main baddies are arguably among the best characters in each of their respective games (XIII is the exception), at least if we consider Jecht the X antagonist and either Gabranth or Dr Cid the XII antagonist.

I didnt really appreciate Seymour until my most recent playthrough. He definitely went up my list a lot after that one as I feel he really does make a great villain for the game.

i think we think in completely different ways about video game characters. "likable qualities", to me, would be being well written, having motivations that make sense, maybe being cool or making me laugh in the game. all of those are just as likely to apply to a main villain as a main protagonist - and then, much more so than secondary cast members etc. which is to say, i typically find the villain much more likable than secondary "heroes"

Not gonna get into the NES titles because they're literally the NES titles.

FFIV: We're counting the lead villain here as Golbez, right? Regardless, not among my favorite FFIV characters, nah.
FFV: Exdeath is cheesy enough that I like him on his own lol merits, sure.
FFVI: Kefka is certainly among the best this game has to offer.
FFVII: Ditto with Sephiroth, yup.
FFT: Well Vormav ain't all that great, but this game's got Wiegraf and (arguably) Delita so those are fantastic.
FFVIII: Yeah, kinda. Edea is pretty good. Ultimecia is pretty good by proxy, I guess.
FFIX: Kuja's great, yes.
FFX: I prefer Seymour over Jecht by a sizable margin. But I really like Seymour.
FFXII: I actually quite enjoy Vayne as a character. But Dr. Cid is even better. So yes.
FFXIII: ...I can't even remember this pleb's name, so no.
FFXV: Ardyn is excellent, yes.

I don't dislike Seymour but he's just....really goofy to me. And that's not necessarily a bad thing but I just appreciate the tragicness of Jecht more than Seymour.

IV: played twice and dont remember any of them well
V: Exdeath and Gilgamesh are both great
VI: Kefkas great
VII: Sephs ok
VIII: Both are pretty neat
IX: I dunno why I cant remember Kuja. Ive played the game 3 or 4 times and I just struggle to remember anything about him. Go my bad memory :(
X: Seymour is decent enough. I like Jecht more if ya count him
XII: I dont remember any of these guys even among the heroes
XIII: Indifferrence probably. Need to replay it

Final Fantasy honestly has a really poor villain track record.

The first 6 games all have sorta memorable villains that are still cool but then you have Seph and his knock offs in 8, 9, 10, and worst of all in this aspect 13 that are all pretty underwhelming.

Tactics has a great series of villains but no overarching antagonist outside of sort of delita.

I've always been into the potential of Seymour and what his character has made me felt through his boss fights, but FFX screwed him over by giving him such a weak finale.

He drives so much of the plot and intrigue for the meat of the game, but once the final reveals happen he doesn't really fit into the story anymore and he's just unceremoniously finished. The best boss music in the series doesn't even get a place in a final boss rush.
