Huh?

Some people ask where you from to a person of color, and if it's from the same country there is the "where are you REALLY from"/"where are your parents from" because they wanted to know your ethnicity

Its offensive or something. This one girl got offended i was asking where shes from or whats her ethnicity and i literally was asking cause i could not tell and was trying not to offend her and it somehow backfired so i got annoyed and said i really dont care and walked away.

She was from somewhere in Europe and thats as much as i ever found out.

That's kind of a stupid reason to be offended.

My first language is not English and I got often asked where I am from from people from other countries due to my accent.

This is litterally an extremely petty reason to be offended. People who ask that clearly have no hateful intentions.

I'd say being rejected by this guy over such a petty thing is a good thing. Imagine dating someone with such a think skin or even living with someone like him. He'll try to find litterally everything to nag about

I bring it up because as much as i am a rude asshole a lot of times that was an instance of me trying to not be offensive and take an ibterest and i didnt kbow how ot was offensive and was really confused by her reaction.

"Why does it matter!?"

"Uh, i guess it doesnt i was just curious. Um, sorry? So, you dont want me to know or should i already know?"

I don't get offended just annoyed. Like alright let me spend a few minutes explaining to you my family's background because "white", "hispanic", or "white hispanic" obviously isn't enough. Pair that with being asked by 80% of the people you meet and growing up in an area where being Mexican wasn't very popular can get pretty frustrating. All for the sake of small talk that doesn't go anywhere.

I don't get offended, just want people to say what they mean. The where you really from is slightly rude since it implies you can't really be part of whatever social group the person said because of that ethnicity

What's wrong with being asked "where I'm from" vs. my ethnicity?

I'm black so what, do I just say "My family is from Virginia"? Or am I being forced to say "I'm from some African country" when there's no proof that my family is from there?

Ok. I can get it for this. But is asking where someone is from(assuming your dating or he/she is a coworker) really that bad? As long as you don't ask it to random people on the street.

Ethnicity=/=race is the conflict, though. You can be raised in Africa without being genetically African, for example.

On one hand I get it, because even as a white person I have been asked that question. Growing up people would always try and find out each others heritage, asking where each other are from. My answer has always been Canada because I can trace my heritage back to people that were settled here before Canada was founded, so I am as Canadian as it gets in my opinion. People put stock into their heritage for whatever reason. Personally I ask people that question because I like to ask questions about where they are from. Normally the question is triggered due to their accent, if they don't have an accent it's not a question that comes to mind.

There's pretty much no such thing as a non-creepy way of asking people about their ethnic background in casual conversation - people who don't bother with the matter are just going to find it a really unseemly thing to be asked, especially if they were born in the US or their family has been here for a generation or two, and people who are proud of their heritage will tell you, sometimes unprompted, or make it explicit.

It's cuz so many white people don't know their family background and just say "I'm American. My family is from America teehee." but they're not Indigenous either. If white people had just owned up to the question "Where are you from" with real answers in the first place, it wouldn't be a stigmatizing question.

Like so many white people just be like "well I'm Irish or French, or English and probably Italian and Swiss and Polish, I dunno."

If you don't know where your family came to America from, find that out first before you start asking other people.

It's fine to ask this as long as you don't imply that the person you're asking isn't actually from your country purely because of their appearance. Which is what a lot of people do and why this question is considered slightly uncomfortable. It's not hard guys and it's not a SJW conspiracy.

Only as far back as when their family/ancestors immigrated to the Americas, which is different for each person/family, obviously.
