Gaming is doing better now than ever. And technically you shouldn't blame the companies for selling DLC. If you don't like DLC, blame the people who buy enough of it to make it lucrative for the sellers. They cater to the market and the market wants DLC.

To be fair, brood wars added a whole new campagn, new units and loads more features to the map maker.

If that way today as dlc, it would be:

$10 to use lurkers in multiplayer
$25 for new campaign
$30 for new map making features
Etc

Neither are microtransactions, episodic content, freemium, etc etc etc. All can be done well or done poorly.

yeah this

despite the outcry over horse armor, you could just not buy it. I never thought DLC was that intrusive until microtxns started being built into the game design and progression system itself

I'm talking about when you would buy MGS2 for $50, then buy MGS2 Substance for another $50.

Nothing has killed the gaming industry as its the biggest its ever been right now. You have Microsoft and Sony releasing their next gen consoles in 2020, Nintendo having the best console cycle in a decade and Google stepping in with Stadia.

DLC is fine. Im not sure when it happened but gamers just started automatically assuming that any game that releases content after launch was just cut from the base game. The hate DLC gets is just weird, I just assume its people going through FOMO.

That's not a reason. You're just complaining about 1 game. Name one problem that DLC have when speaking generally and not talking about 1 game

I still remember when ARMA had a DLC that added hugely detailed, flight sim level control for helicopters, and opted to let players play on servers that used the DLC but be unable to access it, so it wouldn't split up the community. People actually argued that they were greedy for charging money, and that they should've split the community up as a better solution.

The weirdest of it all is the most fervent and entitled gamers about DLC and microtransactions are the ones that are of age that grew into the industry with it. I always figured it'd be old grouches like me that grew up with Atari and NES where the entire cart was the entire game. Any additional content was a sequel that was an entirely new cart.

That said, I've never had problems with either. I buy additional content I want and don't buy what I don't. I can't think of a single game I own since DLC was a thing that I didn't enjoy the game initially or without the DLC content that I bought. And now I dove in the last year into my first F2P game and held out a real long time actually ever spending money on it. I have since then and I don't regret it. I think games are doing better to cater to a wider audience than ever before.

Except that generally, those DLC doors are designed from the start to be DLC. One department finishes its work well before the others, and are put to work on additional content. As other departments finish, they work on that content, slated to be released either at release, or soon after. There is absolutely zero reason beyond entitlement it needs to be part of the core game, unless they're doing some Asura's Wrath shit of cutting out key parts of the story.

Pretty much. I think most gamers assume a game ships, the studio shuts down, and the employees go off on a vacation until the creative director has an idea.

Heck I wish more games had DLC. God of War 2018 for one.

honestly, I don't see too many people complaining about traditional DLC like map packs, mission packs, costume packs, etc

people complain about endless patches coz let's be honest, running into a bug on day 1 is pretty annoying. I'm at the point where for some devs who are infamous for bugs, I don't purchase the game until months after its released and stuff has been ironed out

the biggest complaints I see are about gameplay designed around locking progression behind a slow grind, and trying to get players to pay to speed it up

and a personal complaint that I don't see much, but is a pet peeve of mine, I hate what microtxns have done to game interfaces. So much of the interface revolves around getting you to buy s***

Disagree. I think lootboxes and microtransactions executed like they are in Grand Theft Auto Online are the real problems

Either you get modded in game money to buy overpriced stuff to be able to defend yourself, or you grind like it's a second job when all it takes is some rando asshole with 1-3 homing missiles to fuck up your last few hours of effort. <s>So I went with the modded money</s>
