Because this is literally what they have always been doing since the site was made. At its core Deadspin was a sarcastic, snarky site for sports fans, but just because the site was for sports fans, doesn't mean they only want to write about sports all the time.

Think of it in terms of a social board (or the community tag now, I guess) for a game board. You have a commonality with the people on the board because you all play the same game. You like the people on the board. You want to know more about their thoughts and opinions and you want to discuss things beyond just that game. Someone could tell you to "go to Current Events if you want to talk about random things" but you don't want to talk to CE people. You want to talk to fellow fans of the game.

Deadspin was a site for sports fans that didn't only talk about sports. In fact a lot of the non-sports articles actually did better from a readership perspective than the sports articles. Cutting those out, cuts out the heart of Deadspin. If you want sports information and game recaps, there are many better sites for that, people went to Deadspin because of its voice and its broad range of topics.

Worth reminding posters like this that their non-sports articles generated more views and ad revenue than their sports articles.

And yet the entire brand was losing so much money that the website was resold twice, each time only for less than a quarter of its previous price. And the writers still think they could just keep doing the same thing and everything will turn around okay. That's what gamblers do, but these writers are hired to do a job, not to gamble.

They have like about 10 blog sites they need to manage. They have no reason to pay for multiple blogs that have over 40% overlapping content. If each blog doesn't do enough to specialize in its own field, it's waste of money.

They already have 2 politics blogs, why should they spend money on a third who doesn't even do enough to pretend it's about sports?

If you say Deadspin is more popular than their other politics blogs, then would you rather be for closing down the other 2 blogs and rebrand Deadspin as politics blogs?

Either way it's super petty that the writers are ordering around their readers like their personal army to pressure their managers into submission.

Say you are a team leader, and your team members have quarrel with you, how would you feel if instead of they trying to work out this issue with you, they bring a mob with torches and pitchforks to confront you and scare you into bowing to their demands? And you are the one paying for them. This is mutiny.

I would consider why it was so easy for my team members to easily raise a mob against me. Generally speaking, good faith management styles don't lead to easy mob formation.
