this is pure headcannon on my part - kojima's name being plastered all over mgs5 was done because konami limited his involvement with his team and basically didn't allow him to make the whole game, and he knew he was getting fired anyway.

i'm not that petty of a person but i'm petty enough to do that if i was in that situation.

I wouldn't doubt it, tbh. Maybe his relations with Konami were souring before MGSV. After all, apparently they weren't greenlighting anything he wanted to do except for Metal Gear (Silent Hills was the exception until they up and cancelled it on him) and one would likely get angry over that.

I heard him tell a story at a convention about how sometimes he would just throw out some stupid random bullshit at Kojima, and Kojima just gets super excited and acts like it's genius and then runs over to add it to the script.

Apparently originally he was having a hard time acting out the scenes with monsters, so one day Norman complained that it was hard to act out the scene without a reference and Kojima didn't understand. Norman said "It's like I'm fighting an invisible monster!". What he wanted was just someone to stand in *for* the monster, but Kojima took it the wrong way and just made all the monsters invisible and told him it was a very good idea

For one, I thought people liked Peace Walker.

Second, eh...I wouldn't say MGS4 wasn't good. If it honestly used the sneaking mechanics from Act 1 for more of the game it would've been better. I think people mostly complained about the half-assed "nanomachines" card it played for every explanation.

I enjoy the series, but I feel like among the fan base, MGS & MGS3 are super overrated, and MGS4 is underrated.

Nah I'd say it started around when 2 came out. That game wasn't exactly unanimously praised when it released.

I disliked 4 more than 5 personally.

Kojima is a weird guy for me. I feel he hasn't had a truly great game since MGS3 (arguably even MGS2), and I feel all the issues that hold his more modern games back have everything to do with him.

All of his more modern games suffer from this thing where it's like he just doesn't give a shit and does whatever the fuck he wants even if it will add nothing to the game or flat out make it worse. I want to say this has everything to do with people inflating his ego by saying everything he does is genius, but then the other part of me realizes that he has stated he wanted to move on from Metal Gear Solid since MGS2. He reiterated this after MGS3, but reports are that he was forced back to MGS4 by fan backlash. And from there I assume that Konami also must have had a hand in keeping him tied to Metal Gear Solid.

So on one hand, he completely fucked up one of my favorite series. On the other...I can't fault him for trying to do what he wanted within a series that he was stuck working with. For all of the complaints I have with MGS4, Peace Walker and MGS V, I still found enjoyment in the games. My main problem with MGS V is the fact that it doesn't live up to it's potential, with mods it is still probably my third most played game this generation. I still play it to this day.

Death Stranding looks stupid as fuck to me. It looks like the epitome of Kojima being Kojima. After two decades of not truly getting to do what he wants though? Eh, whatever. It's not for me, but I can't fault him for finally just going all out with what he wants to do. Maybe it will turn out to be genius, but I'm not holding my breath and I don't plan to buy it until it's heavily reduced. But if people enjoy it and he enjoyed making it then good.
