https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2019/10/02/hiv-positive-man-grindr-abuse-twitter-tim-viral/

Tim, of Leicester, is a 29-year-old trading manager based in Coventry. His status is proudly listed on his Twitter bio and often discusses topics relating to HIV and the community. In screenshots Tim saved before being blocked, an anonymous Grindr user interrogated him asking how he acquired HIV before branding Tim an arrogant c*** after he calmly outlined where the user could educate themselves on HIV. Its a conversation that bluntly began with a blank profile asking Tim just before 9am: How did you get HIV? Most people diagnosed with HIV in the UK acquire the virus through unprotected vaginal or anal sex, Tim wrote back. How did you get it, the user further questioned, from f***ing around or did your boyfriend give it to you? Tim responded: Why does this matter to you? Why would you ask such personal questions. Like most people in the UK, I acquired it via sex, who that was from or how that happened has nothing to do with you, especially as a blank profile. If youd like to know more, you can look at the NHS website or search for Terrence Higgins Trust. But the Grindr user in blue did not take too kindly to Tims words. Lmao [laugh my a** off] still an arrogant c*** I see. Funny isnt it how the shallow arrogant pricks end up catching HIV. Serves you right, he added.

After dropping the screenshots of the colourful exchange on Twitter last weekend, it quickly tallied more than 100 replies and an outpouring of support and praise from LGBT+ users. One user said: Oh Tim thats just awful. Nothing gives him the right to speak to you like that, let alone behind the shield of an anonymity. Hes obviously got some very serious issues with his life, and is jealous of your confidence and openness to be who you are, and not shy away from it. Another added: The community is filled with ignorance, abusive behaviour, and bigotry such a shame those things were said to you. Let the world know your story and never be ashamed to talk about your life. This just makes my blood boil. Sorry you had to deal with this, said a user. Pioneering HIV campaigner and AIDSmap executive director Matthew Hodson told PinkNews that its a common reality for people living with HIV to encounter such acidic judgement both on and offline. Often theres an expectation that people living with HIV should inform any potential sexual partners before sex, he said. This is despite the fact that when someone is on effective treatment they cant pass it on to their sexual partners (often referred to as Undetectable = Untransmittable).

That doesn't sound like abuse. Sounds like the guys he's speaking with don't want to get infected and don't like his evasive and nonchalant responses that minimize the seriousness of HIV.

How was he acting like its no big deal? He clearly stated it on his profile (mandatory disclosure for undetectable poz people is actually considered a major violation by civil rights groups, keep in mind). This guy harrassed him for no reason. Definition of discrimination.

From what I understand Grindr has an HIV section for people to put that info in their bios. And there is also a HIV positive tribe so the guy in OP did either of those things.

I had the same thought when I originally read it. Particularly because of his use of the word "still" when he said "still an arrogant c-word". That makes it seem like they already had some history together.

Reminds me of this case:

Consider Nick Rhoades, an HIV-positive gay man in Iowa, going about his life. Faithful adherence to his medications rendered Rhoades' HIV infection undetectable. Studies indicate those with undetectable virus are up to 96 percent less likely to transmit the virus to someone else. Rhoades arranged a sexual encounter with a man he met online. Neither of them spoke about HIV.

When a friend later told the other man that Rhoades was HIV-positive, the man went to the county prosecutor and pressed charges. Despite the fact that Rhoades used a condom, had an undetectable viral load, and did not transmit the virus, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for not disclosing his HIV status. After a year, the judge reconsidered Rhoades' sentence and released him -- but still required him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

If you have any type of sexual disease you should let the other person know before you engage in an act that could potentially transmit the disease to them.

Just because theres a form of treatment doesnt mean you shouldnt have to tell someone, what if they forget to take their medication? The person without disease deserves to know.

You should tell the other person about the disease and tell them youre on the medication, if they still say no then oh well. Not telling them is extremely selfish.

Thats not really how HIV/AIDS meds work. You need to be extremely religious about taking them daily. Miss more than a few days in a given sixth month period and theres a good chance the virus will build up a resistance to the meds and youll be screwed.

Also you dont just miss your meds one day and all of a sudden become viral again. If youre on antiretroviral drugs, undetectable and quit them for good, cold turkey it will be months or even years before you can transmit it again. And by then youll quite possibly be sick again anyway, fatally so.

I was not trying to explain how the medication works. I was trying to convey that just because the medication exists you have to gamble on the chance they are taking it correctly, or even at all.

I dont see how that solves your specific problem, of these suicidal AIDS patients who are for some reason not taking their medicine that they need to stay alive.

Only 19 states have laws requiring people who are aware of their HIV status to disclose it to sexual partners. Again, if its nontransmittable what is the difference? You guys are just being prejudiced. You would get torn apart by rights groups.
