Idk but if you can get it for free, that should definitely be taken advantage of. Get the expansions when they go on sale, too. Except ....is it Sunset Invasion that pretty much just adds frustration to the game?

Conclave seems more likely to add just frustration than Sunset Invasion. I like both of them.

Its really not. Ignore the in-game tutorial, ignore all strategy guides and manuals that people post online. Just start you up a game, turn the speed of time all the way up and unpause it. Just react to all the pop-up things that pop up for a while. That will be enough to entertain you for a while. Eventually, this will start to bore you, and youll want to start tinkering with more in-depth stuff. By this point, youll be familiar enough with the basics that stuff you thought was super complex is actually more intuitive than you thought. Every now and then, you run across a real head-scratcher. When that happens, theres no shame in just googling whatever is on your mind.

The game does a great job of letting you dip yourself in as deep as you want at your own pace, but still very playable if you have no clue what youre doing. Remember, there really is no objective goal that is set in stone, so you cant actually fuck things up too bad, unless youre just deliberately being a dumbass (which is also fun to do).

I like your post, Ic3Bullet.

I love CK2. I'm not sure how "good" I am, and I prefer to play with mods and with certain settings that disable achievements, but I think I'm a decent player. Really looking forward to CK3, but I am curious how much it'll have at launch vs. how much will be DLC.

yeah i would have rather they waited a little longer on ck3 as they literally JUST finished ck2, but i do think they look like they are going in a good direction for ck3.

Still it would have been nice to get vicky 3 first

So, there's a simple solution. Just keep playing CK2 and ignore CK3 until you get bored of CK2.

I think going free is a brilliant idea for their games going forward. Maybe after 2 or 3 years when the amount of DLC gets to be 4 or 5+

It's a great game to go free to play, can get a ton of playtime just in the base game.

But imo Warframe is still the best free to play game out there.

Right, I have a little list of interesting/unique characters.

1066
-Duchess Matilda di Canossa of Tuscany
This is a good play once you've got your feet wet: you have firm control of a very rich duchy, you have a young ruler with good stats, and are in position to expand in multiple directions. Just be sure to marry Matilda matrilineally! Historically, Matilda was one of Pope Gregory VII's supporters in his conflict with Emperor Heinrich IV and convinced the Pope to forgive Heinrich after he spent three days outside her castle(Gregory had taken refuge there, fearful of an invasion) in the snow, barefoot and clothed in sackcloth.

-Duke Robert "Guiscard" de Hauteville
A Norman raider in southern Italy who got official titles from the Pope, because the Pope was afraid of the Normans. Older ruler, but great stats and a massive family, plus you're in prime position to claim all of southern Italy and Sicily. You can then expand where you please, and are in excellent position to participate in Crusades.

-Duke Eric "the Heathen" of Uppland(requires Old Gods)
While Sweden has officially been Christian for decades, Duke Eric af Munso still adheres to the old ways. Are you a bad enough dude to save the Norse faith from conversion and destruction? The fact that Eric has a claim on the Swedish throne might help you get started.

-Spain is good: any of the larger dukes or kingdoms is a pretty exciting play. Pretty much the same goes for the Muslims to the south, if you have Sword of Islam.

-Count Herbert of Vermandois
Historically, Herbert was the last male descendant of Charlemagne. Where his grandfathers ruled most of what is today Western Europe, Herbert rules a single county. Can you return the dynasty to greatness?

-Count Werner of Aargau
1066 has a playable Hapsburg! The Hapsburgs would one day become Dukes of Austria, come to dominate the HRE, and wear several crowns in their days. They were not deposed until after the First World War.

-Count Guillaume of Bourgogne
The d'Ivreas used to be a great dynasty, and, historically, they were fated to be great once more: holding a number of duchies and even a few crowns. Another massive family to leverage for alliances and influence.

Thanks for the ideas!

I only listed interesting Christians available in 1066(well, mostly. Eric the Heathen is too neat a challenge not to mention), in case people don't have DLCs. I have a few for earlier starts. I'll indicate what DLCs are required for them.

867(all require The Old Gods
-Haesteinn of Nantes
Basically every other major Viking has a firm "home" or at least an obvious direction(and is a fun play. Being Norse owns). Rurik in Novgorod, Haraldr Fairhair in Norway, etc. etc. Haesteinn has a hearty stack of event troops and just Nantes in Brittany, with the boats and martial to go where he pleases. Where you please.

-Khagan Manasseh of Khazaria(+Sons of Abraham, also Horse Lords is recommended)
Khagan Manasseh is the most powerful Jewish ruler you'll find, but you are far from Israel, your faith's sacred but long-lost cradle. With plenty of hungry nomads on your heels and Christian Byzantium and the Abbasid Caliphate both near, your position is tenuous but provides much opportunity for growth.

-Satrap Vandad of Karen
One of the last independent Zoroastrian rulers. A hefty stack of event troops ensures that you're no push-over, but the Muslim Caliph can crush you as soon as look at you even so. You'll need to manage your many Muslim neighbors carefully if you are to rekindle the holy fires.

-Alfred, Earl of Dorset
Younger brother to the (Petty) King of Wessex, Aethelred. Historically, his brother would die suddenly a few years later, putting Alfred on the throne. Once there, he would defeat the Norse raiders and lay the foundation for a united England, earning himself the epithet "the Great".

769(all require Charlemagne)

-Satrap Jimofuta of Zunbil(+Old Gods)
The sole realm to adhere to Zunism, a faith which centered around the sun and seemed to combine elements of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Zoroastrianism. Your position is difficult and your faith's moral authority is extremely low, but you can expose prisoners to Zun's judgement, and isn't that what really matters?

-King Phineas of Semien/Beta Israel(+Sons of Abraham)
Semien, in modern Ethiopia, was home to Jewish sects for centuries, and at times, independent of or even dominant over the rest of the kingdom. This is not one of the latter times: you'll almost certainly need to bend the knee to one of your Christian neighbors to survive. You'll need the wisdom and patience of Solomon to restore Alpha Israel.

-King Sigurdr Ring of Uppsala(+Old Gods)
Hey, how would you like to reform Germanic and spend the next 600+ years raiding the high seas without a care in the world? Oh yeah, also your son is the legendary Ragnar Lodbrok, and he's hard-coded to be decent at absolute worst, and old Sigurdr's breaks 20 in martial himself, so yeah, just roll face.

Honestly though, the 769 start kind of blows. In any case, that's a very incomplete list and also already outdated, probably.
