Like you have to watch ads before you order food and they give you really tiny portions so you have to keep watching ads.

Because no single ad view will amount to the price of even the cheapest meal. We're talking pennies or less per ad.

One well written and researched article or YouTube video can entertain millions of people. Each individual customer of the restaurant would still need their own individual food prepared and served to them. It's not an equivalent model.

This. You'd have to watch an insane amount of ads.

Which is why girls go on dates with guys, they trade sexual favors for food, and sometimes a place to sleep for the night.

it's not unheard of for interests in certain sectors to hold promotional seminars for whatever they're peddling with free food as a point to lure people in

ad-supported restaurants, i suppose, would be a sort of inversion of the emphasis in this strategy

Yeah, those "Free meal if you attend this presentation" situations are generally looking to make enough high-pressure same-day sales to cover the cost of the food and then some.

Basically, if someone spends money to give you something "for free," then they are expecting to get, at minimum, a return that equals or surpasses the amount invested.

A bunch of video ads at a fast food restaurant will basically just be ignored and would lead to a really bad return on the investment. (i.e., if you give out $1,000 of free food, you might get $20 in ad revenue, and most of those people aren't going to buy anything based on the ad--they're literally there to get a free cheeseburger, you think they're gonna buy whatever overpriced crap is being shoved down their throat by the drive thru screen?)

that is a very good point, the high pressure sales factor is paramount with respect to profitability

Because they'd basically have to be wall-to-wall ads, with little drones carrying even more ads up into your face all through the meal, before advertisers would pay enough to support a restaurant. No one wants to eat in thst kind of environment.

All restaurants are free. Just hang out by the dumpster right after closing time.
