Sure. I bought a subscription to Dollar Shave Club after hearing about it in YouTube videos. I didn't buy as soon as I saw the ads but I eventually decided to try it. Also bought some Gorilla Glue after hearing the name from a co-worker and checking out the ads for it.

And these are just examples I remember and conscientiously made the decision for.

Based on what? It's a fact that companies in almost every industry spend tons of money on marketing and it's a fair assumption that they do so because it nets them more profit. None of that has anything to do with my personal experiences.

Yes, both because it created awareness of a product and, in some cases, because it made a compelling case for said product.

Most of the time the existence of an ad informing me that something exists is just the first step, though. Outside of low-cost foodstuffs, I'll usually try to find more information about the product at which point other forms of marketing are influencing me.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything, but probably.

But from word of mouth, definitely. Also, YouTube DIY videos (not sure if that counts as advertising, since the DIYer doesn't necessarily mean to advertise the product; it's just kinda what they used... and sometimes I buy an offbrand).

Also, grocery store weekly ad deals, if that counts. I really like looking at it, even if I barely buy the things on there.

When I was little, it almost worked. I say almost because my folks never bought the things that interested me.

As I got older and a bit resentful towards the world in general, I found myself turned off by advertisements rather than persuaded to buy stuff. Now I avoid TV and have Ad-Block running where I can, so the advertisements I am exposed to are minimal and so low-impact on people in general, I shrug and do only what I was going to do anyways.

Of course ads have gotten me to buy stuff. The rate of success is pathetically low per different product/ad viewed, easily in the 0.0x % range, but it happens.

My most notable example would probably be a commercial for Enigma's 4th album, Screen Behind the Mirror. I saw the commercial for it once, randomly at like 2 am.... And it stuck with me for a couple of years, still remembering "Gravity of Love" (song from said album) and eventually seeking it out and going on to buy every damn album Enigma had at the time (5; MCMXC A.D. through L.S.D.)

I notice that very few ads make me want the product. But that might be because I usually turn off personalized ads on my devices. A few ads have made me curious. These tend to be ads through podcasts or just appeal to my sense of humor.

Of course. Creating awareness of a product, awareness of a sale (if the original price was a deterrent), or just giving more information about a product are reasonable ways to convince a consumer.

So you "care", but only when it doesn't effect you in any meaningful way. If you cared about the planet, you wouldn't have your oven fired up 24/7 to keep your wife's stomach at bay.

Do trailers count? The trailer for To the Moon single-handedly convinced me to buy the game (though I still checked some reviews before going through on that impulse), and there have definitely been other trailers that significantly influenced my motivation to buy a game/movie ticket.

If we're talking more about ads for non-entertainment products, I can't think of any specific examples, but I'm sure I've at least been made aware of a few, and I've definitely been influenced at a subconscious level (because everyone has, no matter how intellectually superior they'd like to think they are).

@Mead

"The good news is that the concentrations of BPA in toilet paper are pretty small. We absorb much more BPA when we touch credit card receipts directly."

"Although theres a slight risk of BPA exposure, recycled toilet paper continues to be a better option. Using a recycled product helps to preserve trees, protect habitat, keep our water clean, and save energy."

Most recent was the chicken nachos from Taco Bell. I have never liked Taco Bell, but knowing they had something new like that made me want to try it. I hated them and will never get them again, but it worked that once.

The original TV ad for Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction made me want to buy that game, and I bought it based on pretty much the ad alone. Didn't regret it at all. Damn fine game.

Other than that, several food ads have made me hungry before, but never for the brand that's actually being advertised. It's more like "oh, that McDonald's ad reminds me that I bought hamburger meat."
