It's a dickslap to the face. I'd rather just get an 86 tbh. To be so close to an A but not actually get that A...it sucks!

I remember getting an 88 on a paper in high school. The only note was Good Job! on the front. I asked the teacher where I lost points and what would have made it better or get a higher score, and she just shrugged. I was pretty mad about that.

I've had students with grades of 89.9 and I'm still not bumping them up to the next letter grade

you get what you deserve according to the rules set out in the syllabus

If its an overall point system then an 89 is definitely better than an 86
