So I'd guess he's about 40, but then his childhood friend (the red head) would also look older, so not sure

Anime almost always has ridiculously low ages for the given characters and their history, accomplishments, and appearance.
Everyone focuses on when it's a female character, but it's true for the male characters, too.

Anyway, based on what I've seen from the first season anime and having never seen any of the light novels, manga, or whatever, I imagined him as being about 25 years old. Doesn't look aged (just scarred), but also doesn't look like a teen at all, and he must have been doing this for years to have reached silver rank just killing goblins.
Wouldn't surprise me at all if his "official" age was 18-20, then. That'd be par for the course w/ anime...

One Piece recently showed some of the backstory for a character who before he was a year old, threw his wet nurse across the room, could catch two rabbits at once at age two, killed a bear with a boulder at age 4, started hitting the red light district at age 6, drunkenly fought with gamblers at age 8, burned down a Yakuza den at age 10, built a harem of local women by age 15, and looked like a buff 30-something at age 18
