i cant speak as to how critics felt but my dad took me to each prequel movie then complained about each one for days after lol

as a kid i thought they were boring but i couldnt articulate them as bad or anything. just boring. i had friends who liked them and friends who thought they were dumb

AotC and TPM were absolutely shit on by a large chunk of the public immediately at release. The idea that they only were retrospectively attacked is complete and utter nonsense that goes against the evidence and reviews we have of them at the time.

I don't really believe a mixed reaction or controversy is all that bad for Star Wars.

The worse reaction it can get is apathy. Like what we saw for Solo.

I think Rise of Skywalker will be successful. People will absolutely watch pay and watch these movies expecting to hate them. So they can talk about them.

It's very rare for a cliffhanger ending to be well received.

In the long run no one cares but they're usually disappointing at the time.

Infinity War is the best one I can think of.

Nobody's talking about critics. The only time the "empire was initially divisive" line comes out is when people are trying to defend TLJ's poor audience response. Critics loved TLJ, so that talking point wouldn't even make sense if it was about critics.
