They rushed it because time was of the essence, they would lose orders unless they came up with a competitive product. So they made the MAX, putting very large engines on what was essentially a 50 year old design. The engines had a tendency to make the plane pitch up, a stall inducing move. They did the MCAS software to pitch the nose down. For some reason they felt like they didn't need to pilots about this.
