Do you or did you stutter?

I saw an article about Joe Biden stuttering in the politics topic that resonated with me as a fellow stutterer. I'm a little embarrassed that I never recognized Biden's speech patterns as attempts to avoid stuttering, because once described, I recognize some of the tactics as the same ones I use. I feel like I should have been able to catch that a sudden pivot to a somewhat different word or topic (for example, Biden gives the example of being ridiculed for saying "gentle man" (two words) instead of "gentleman" (one word) in class when he knew he could not say "gentleman") can be an attempt to avoid saying a word that one knows will not be pronounceable.

For me, probably the single hardest thing to say is my drink order on an airplane - it's something that's usually only one word and that I have colossal amounts of time to think about, which renders it extremely hard to say. So I might get around this by ordering a "water" when I want a coke but know I cannot pronounce the word "coke" or the phrase "a coke" but don't want to embarrass myself by ordering "one cup of coke."

Personally, my stuttering has diminished to the point where most of my friends and coworkers who I've met in the last few years don't know that it exists. It used to be really bad though, to the point where not only would I stumble on words but some words I just would not be able to get out at all - I would look like I was gasping for air or choking if I tried to force out those words. Anyways, feel free to talk about stuttering or Joe Biden in this topic.

Yes, but I've gotten a lot better. I use to have a slight stutter when I was growing up but now with added stress and anxiety it's more of a stumble on words. Like you red, I find that I know what I want to say but I just can't say the word so I find another word or synonym to replace it. I've gotten better but it comes back every once in a while when I'm really stressed. It could be talking over the phone or face-to-face.

It's why I hate talking in front of crowds. The first day of any class or meeting where you have to stand up and introduce yourself is the worst for me. One example is meeting my new boss: I went to introduce myself but stumbled on my own name. It was embarrassing. Other than those times of anxiety and stress, I talk normal.

Not an actual stutter, but I often stammer over my own words or get tongue tied. Guessing because I'm not always sure which words to use and so it just comes out a jumbled mess.
