One of the best things MTG has done right is when they started to use the word, "Their," since it make sense. It went from something like, "Target player sacrifices a creature he/she controls," to, "Target player sacrifices a creature they control."

This kind of shit happens over and over and over again. I'm the only guy that works in the kitchen, people come in and say, "hello ladies," and it's the same the other way. I'm watching Naruto Shippuden right now and I guess all the ninja are male because they only address ninja as males. "When a Ninja from the Leaf Village lays down his life. . .," and not, "When a Ninja from the Leaf Village lays down their life. . .."

It happens all the fucking time in every genre I'm exposed to

There's a... construct in a story I wrote that's referred to as male by other characters.

Fight me.

So that person isn't a fake. Well, it's a story so it IS fake, but you know what I mean. That character had a gender, you're talking about someone.

No, it's just a construct. It may or may not actually be sentient, but you're not given a strong indicator either way. Although the main reason other characters refer to it as male is because it looks like one (with clothes on, at least, I didn't explore beyond that).

I get what you're saying, but I'm of the opinion we just let creators do what they want to do and let people who care too much about this shit flame out on Twitter.

A player playing Magic: The Gathering doesn't look like anyone. Every ninja in Naruto doesn't look like anyone.

This started to bug me because I had to so a bunch of online crap for me [I work at a school, so this is for abuse, sexual harassment, racism, ect} and this is how it would go -

"If a student comes up to you with a problem, you need to listen and report him or her to the person in charge depending on who he or she is."

Those people are no one, just made up and hypothetical. Just use "They" and "Them"

I agree that constantly using "him or her" is kind of distracting and can appear a bit forced. Sometimes people just randomly use masculine or feminine, like they use him a few times then her a few times. I don't know. Meh.

Yeah, in college we were taught her in one instance and then switching to him next instance is fine or saying he or she. I always found the latter cumbersome, but it's alright. I had a professor that hated singular they, but that was just the one guy and he wasn't even an English teacher.

"Honey, where did the kids go?"
"He and she went to the store."

Sounds fucking stupid, right?

"If a student doesn't have money in his or her account then he or she can get a free meal portion that your school provides. If he or she is allergic to that food, then you you can provide him or her the main food"

That is equally as stupid. It should be saying -

"If a student doens't have money in their account then they can get a free meal portion that your school provides. If they are allergic to that food, then you can provide them the main food."

But that's what got my started with this whole being frustrated over it. I had to hear this sort of shit read like that 100 times. He or she that, his or her that.

No, it doesn't, "make sense." It's just what you're used to saying. It's your personal prejudice coming through. And that is fine, everyone single person has this. It's not a bad thing Edit - What are we talking about? Let's say you want to talk about how to hit on a girl. Then you've already created two characters, which need genders. If you're talking about all the brave soldiers that have been killed to save our country, then they should be brave soldiers and not brave men

It's only an annoying thing to me because I'm not some 'woke' person that just started to complain about this. I have always been very hyper awake of things like that. In the rules of games, they almost always said his or her and not just player or something. I've always been aware of it. Most people don't even think about it, but it is psychological sexism/bias for all genders, and even as a kid growing up in the 80s and early 90s I never had that. I always found it strange when people would do it

Nah, it's especially important for games. RPGs more so than magic but it still stands.

"She says he encounters goblins. Then she asks him if she would like to try and sneak past them. He looks at his sheet and decides he'd rather try to fight. She asks him to roll for initiative and then she rolls initiative for the goblins herself."

Vs.

"They say they encounter goblins. Then they ask them if they would like to try and sneak past them. They look at their sheet and decide they'd rather try to fight. They ask them to roll for initiative and then they roll initiative for the goblins themselves."

The first one has a flow with clearly defined pronouns and the second one is an incomprehensible mess.
