I've been on a PPO for 3 years at work paying just over $100 per paycheck. I have not even gone to the doctor in those 3 years. I've been on a 750-1000 deductible.

This year the HDHP is only $15. The deductible here is $1500. Everything here is on a percentage instead of a fixed copay.

What y'all think?

yes, no reason to go with the PPO unless you have specific medical needs or you have a family to cover

I wouldnt go with the HDHP tbh. That $15 is great until an unnexpected medical expense fucks your life up.

Fucks him up to a slightly higher deductible, while paying much less monthly and being able to contribute pre-tax income to an HSA plan that can be invested?

Switch to the high deductible, but Auto withdrawal the difference between the two plans from your checking and dump it into a savings account. You'll pretty quickly be able to cover the difference in deductible, and that will be interest that you'll be collecting instead of your health plan. Plus it would have no impact on your budget as you would be taking the same amount out of every paycheck.

Wouldn't for my family but if I had the option to only put me on that... >_>

I mean its definitely kind of a gamble but it isn't like you have NO insurance otherwise. Always the possibility of being seriously hurt or having a bad sickness, but if you are most likely never going to go to the doc at all or maybe just like once to get antibiotics for a basic illness you'll save tons of money. >_>

I would recommend just going to the doctor if you do get the HDHP, that way if something is caught you catch it early and pay less overall rather than paying more down the line. It's easier to resolve cancer before it gets metastatic type of thing. I believe if you have near emergencies definitely use urgent care to pay less overall rather than going to the ER immediately.

Figure out how much you spend in actual costs annually.

That should be the general ballpark of your deductible
