They're obviously an issue and keeps poor people poorer for longer. They really should stop allowing people to fuck themselves

Do you have a better solution? Because without access to loans, I'd still be painting cabinets in a factory instead of pursuing a physics degree

Private student loans are predatory as fuck though. I'd be screwed if I had taken out my tuition with private loans and their shitty interest rates.

Because they enable schools to raise tuition indefinitely. Students cant escape via bankruptcy, and kids get access to loans regardless of the economic value of their degree because Uncle Sam backs them. Bloated schools win and students lose.

Student loans are awful. Predatory one way or another no matter who the student is.

The loans are an investment in your own life. Like the guy said above, do you really want to be painting cabinets in a factory your whole life?

Most jobs require a college degree. Either now or soon. Not going to college is setting yourself up to fail.

Most colleges have crap professors anyway and 50% of the classes are a waste of time. We have generations of people putting themselves in life long debt over it though. It's terrible. No wonder this country is in decline. Even immigrants from other countries talk about how low quality some of the education is

TBH I'm surprised there isn't more of a call to stop college from being necessary to get a job rather than just free college.

College can obviously lead to a great career, but it's also really easy to screw yourself over by going to college. And it's all on the student to make the right choices and succeed.

No. It's making sure that the people they're hiring are competent enough to rely on. Some jobs are just too complicated for a high school diploma to be enough.

Well there's scholarships, grants, and working for it

Yeah, right. Because we can all get scholarships and grants.

And if you can't, then you can just go paint cabinets in a factory for 8 years to be able to afford it yourself. No problem.

Most jobs can be trained for but instead people are taking irrelevant classes and orereqs to get to them. Nursing degree for example. There's Dialysis techs, and other medical professionals with no degrees that can do the exact same thing as a nurse and sometimes do even not when they're on the job. This is the case for a lot of different jobs

This

I wasn't able to get a scholarship until my third semester, with the recommendation of one of my professors. And the year before I went back to school, I made too much to qualify for Pell grants, but not enough to pay for college outright

Yeah I could have saved up enough to go debt free eventually, but I'd be in my mid 30s starting an 8-10 year degree plan. And that was making $15/hr, god help your soul if you only make 10 or less

It's not as simple as the dumbed down hypotheticals you guys like to toss out

Well yeah, it takes effort to get that stuff. I applied to two scholarships/grants a week for two years in highschool and still applied through college.

Saved my ass tons. I even worked 20 hours a week to put towards it

Because the debt accumulated by student loans is a drop in the bucket from what the government spends annually on the military. Also they can charge interest.
